10년 동안 나는 집에 가지 않았다. 그리고 마침내 기차에서 내렸을 때, 내 삼촌이 나를 쳐다보더니 곧바로 자신의 신발을 내려다보았다.

For ten years I didn’t go home. And when I finally got off the train, my own uncle looked at me and immediately stared down at his shoes.

“레나.” 삼촌 제프가 말했다. 그게 전부였다. 그러고는 내 가방을 들고 차로 걸어갔다.

“Lena,” said Uncle Sepp. Just that. Then he took my suitcase and walked to the car.

장크트 안나 역은 작아서 선로 하나와 벤치 하나뿐이었다. 마을 뒤편에는 예전과 똑같이 회색빛과 흰색의 산들이 서 있었다. 나는 10년이면 모든 게 변했을 거라고 생각했다. 하지만 이곳은 거의 변한 게 없었다. 나만 빼고.

The station in Sankt Anna is small, just one track and one bench. Behind the village stand the mountains, grey and white, exactly as before. I had thought that everything changes in ten years. But almost nothing had changed here. Except me.

여동생 카트린이 토요일에 결혼한다. 카트린은 3개월 전 나에게 카드 한 장을 보냈는데, 그 안에는 카트린과 턱수염을 기른 남자의 사진이 있었다. 카드 뒷면에는 이렇게 적혀 있었다. 제발 와줘. 아무도 아무 말도 안 할 거야. 약속해.

My sister Katrin is getting married on Saturday. Three months ago she sent me a card with a photo of her and a man with a beard. On the back she wrote: Please come. Nobody will say anything. I promise.

아무도 아무 말도 안 할 거야. 나는 이 문장을 함부르크 사무실에서, 지하철에서, 밤마다 침대에서 백 번도 넘게 읽었다. 그 문장은 위로처럼 들렸다. 지금, 제프 삼촌 옆 차 안에서 그 문장은 협박처럼 들렸다.

Nobody will say anything. I had read that sentence a hundred times, in the office in Hamburg, on the underground, in bed at night. It had sounded like comfort. Now, in the car next to Uncle Sepp, it sounded like a threat.

우리는 마을을 통과해 달렸다. 제프 삼촌은 우리가 교회를 지나가는 바로 그 순간에 라디오 볼륨을 높였다. 나는 이유를 알고 있었다.

We drove through the village. Uncle Sepp turned the radio up at exactly the moment we drove past the church. I knew why.

10년 전, 나는 이 교회에서 결혼할 예정이었다. 하객들은 왔고, 음악은 연주되었고, 토비아스는 제단 앞에서 기다리고 있었다. 그리고 나는 하얀 드레스를 입은 채 택시를 타고 역으로 향했다.

Ten years ago I was supposed to get married in that church. The guests came, the music played, Tobias waited at the altar. And I got into a taxi and went to the station, in my white dress.

그 이후로 우리 가족 중 누구도 그날에 대해 나와 이야기하지 않았다. 전화로도, 편지로도 말이다. 아버지가 돌아가셨을 때도 마찬가지였다.

Since then, nobody in my family has talked to me about that day. Not on the phone, not in letters. Not even when my father died.

어머니 집 앞에서 제프 삼촌은 시동을 껐다. 삼촌은 한참 동안 운전대를 내려다보았다.

In front of my mother’s house Uncle Sepp switched off the engine. He looked at the steering wheel for a long time.

“한 가지는 알아야 한다.” 그러고는 삼촌이 말했다. “토요일에 토비아스가 악단에서 연주를 해. 트럼펫을. 카트린이 그 애를 초대하지 않을 수 없었어.”

“There’s one thing you need to know,” he said then. “Tobias is playing in the village band on Saturday. Trumpet. Katrin couldn’t uninvite him.”

그러고는 삼촌이 내렸고, 나는 쿵쾅거리는 심장을 안고 차 안에 혼자 앉아 있었다.

Then he got out, and I sat alone in the car, my heart pounding.
