At three in the morning, it started again.

Pum. Luego pasos. Luego un silbido. Luego la puerta. Luego silencio.

Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.

Me llamo Lena. Me encanta. Solo que no me gustan las noches.

My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.

Nunca lo he visto. En su buzón solo pone: «J. Brandt, 4.º piso».

Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”

I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.

Esa noche me levanté. Cogí una hoja de papel y escribí:

That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:

Querido vecino del 4.º piso, son las tres de la mañana. La gente duerme a estas horas. ¿Quizás ha oído hablar de ello? L. Weber, 3.er piso

Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor

Pegué la nota en su puerta. Luego bajé rápidamente. Mi corazón latía con fuerza. Más fuerte que sus pasos.

I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.

Me dio mi pretzel.

In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.

«Tiene mala cara hoy», dijo.

“You look terrible today,” he said.

«Gracias», dije. «Mi vecino es un monstruo».

“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”

Él se rió. Yo no me reí.

He laughed. I didn’t.

Por la tarde abrí mi buzón. Dentro había una nota. Ni facturas, ni publicidad. Una respuesta.

In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
