À trois heures du matin, ça a recommencé.
At three in the morning, it started again.
Boum. Puis des pas. Puis un sifflement. Puis la porte. Puis le silence.
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
J’ai collé le mot sur sa porte. Puis je suis vite redescendue. Mon cœur a battu fort. Plus fort que ses pas.
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
“You look terrible today,” he said.
« Merci », ai-je dit. « Mon voisin est un monstre. »
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
Il a ri. Je n’ai pas ri.
He laughed. I didn’t.
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
