रात के तीन बजे यह फिर से शुरू हो गया।
At three in the morning, it started again.
धड़ाम। फिर क़दमों की आवाज़। फिर एक सीटी। फिर दरवाज़ा। फिर शांति।
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
मेरा नाम लीना है। मैं लाइपत्सिग के एक पुराने मकान में तीसरी मंज़िल पर रहती हूँ। मैं दो महीने पहले यहाँ आई थी। घर छोटा है, लेकिन हवादार और चमकदार है। मुझे यह बहुत पसंद है। बस मुझे रातें पसंद नहीं हैं।
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
हर रात तीन बजे मुझे अपने ऊपर वाले पड़ोसी की आवाज़ सुनाई देती है। मैं उसे नहीं जानती। मैंने उसे कभी नहीं देखा। उसके लेटरबॉक्स पर सिर्फ़ लिखा है: “जे. ब्रांट, चौथी मंज़िल”।
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
मैं एक दफ़्तर में काम करती हूँ। आठ बजे मैं कंप्यूटर पर बैठ जाती हूँ। छह हफ़्तों तक कम सोने के बाद मुझे बहुत गुस्सा आ रहा था। बहुत ही ज़्यादा गुस्सा।
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
उस रात मैं उठ गई। मैंने एक काग़ज़ लिया और लिखा:
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
चौथी मंज़िल के प्रिय पड़ोसी, रात के तीन बजे हैं। इस समय दूसरे लोग सोते हैं। शायद आपने इसके बारे में सुना होगा? एल. वेबर, तीसरी मंज़िल
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
मैंने पर्ची उसके दरवाज़े पर चिपका दी। फिर मैं जल्दी से नीचे भाग आई। मेरा दिल ज़ोर से धड़क रहा था। उसके क़दमों की आवाज़ से भी तेज़।
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
सुबह मैं हमेशा की तरह नुक्कड़ वाली बेकरी में गई। बेकर जवान, लंबा और हमेशा थोड़ा थका हुआ सा रहता है। उसने मुझे मेरी ब्रेड दी।
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
“आज आप ठीक नहीं लग रही हैं,” उसने कहा।
“You look terrible today,” he said.
“शुक्रिया,” मैंने कहा। “मेरा पड़ोसी एक राक्षस है।”
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
वह हँसा। मैं नहीं हँसी।
He laughed. I didn’t.
शाम को मैंने अपना लेटरबॉक्स खोला। उसमें एक पर्ची पड़ी थी। कोई बिल नहीं, कोई विज्ञापन नहीं। एक जवाब था।
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
