Pada pukul tiga pagi, itu mulai lagi.
At three in the morning, it started again.
Bum. Lalu langkah kaki. Lalu siulan. Lalu pintu. Lalu sunyi.
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
Nama saya Lena. Saya tinggal di lantai tiga di sebuah rumah tua di Leipzig. Saya pindah ke sini dua bulan lalu. Apartemennya kecil, tapi terang. Saya menyukainya. Hanya saja, saya tidak menyukai malam hari.
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
Setiap malam pukul tiga, saya mendengar tetangga di atas saya. Saya tidak mengenalnya. Saya tidak pernah melihatnya. Di kotak suratnya hanya tertulis: “J. Brandt, Lantai 4”.
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
Saya bekerja di sebuah kantor. Pukul delapan saya duduk di depan komputer. Setelah enam minggu kurang tidur, saya merasa marah. Sangat marah.
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
Malam itu saya bangun. Saya mengambil selembar kertas dan menulis:
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
Tetangga yang terhormat di lantai 4, sekarang jam tiga pagi. Orang lain tidur pada jam ini. Mungkin Anda pernah mendengarnya? L. Weber, Lantai 3
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
Saya menempelkan catatan itu di pintunya. Lalu saya cepat-cepat turun kembali. Jantung saya berdetak kencang. Lebih keras daripada langkah kakinya.
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
Pagi harinya, saya pergi seperti biasa ke toko roti di sudut jalan. Penjual rotinya masih muda, tinggi, dan selalu terlihat sedikit mengantuk. Dia memberikan brezel saya.
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
“Anda terlihat kurang sehat hari ini,” katanya.
“You look terrible today,” he said.
“Terima kasih,” kata saya. “Tetangga saya adalah monster.”
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
Dia tertawa. Saya tidak tertawa.
He laughed. I didn’t.
Sore harinya, saya membuka kotak surat saya. Ada secarik kertas di dalamnya. Bukan tagihan, bukan iklan. Sebuah jawaban.
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
