Alle tre di notte è ricominciato.
At three in the morning, it started again.
Bum. Poi passi. Poi un fischio. Poi la porta. Poi silenzio.
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
Mi chiamo Lena. Abito al terzo piano in una vecchia casa a Lipsia. Mi sono trasferita qui due mesi fa. L’appartamento è piccolo, ma luminoso. Lo amo. Solo le notti non amo.
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
Brandt, 4° piano».
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
Lavoro in un ufficio. Alle otto sono seduta al computer. Dopo sei settimane con poco sonno ero arrabbiata. Molto arrabbiata.
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
Caro vicino del 4° piano, sono le tre di notte. Le altre persone dormono a quest’ora. Forse ne ha già sentito parlare? L. Weber, 3° piano
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
Ho attaccato il biglietto alla sua porta. Poi sono corsa subito giù. Il mio cuore ha battuto forte. Più forte dei suoi passi.
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
«Ha una brutta cera oggi», ha detto.
“You look terrible today,” he said.
«Grazie», ho detto. «Il mio vicino è un mostro.»
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
Lui ha riso. Io non ho riso.
He laughed. I didn’t.
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
