Às três da manhã, começou de novo.

At three in the morning, it started again.

Bum. Depois passos. Depois um assobio. Depois a porta. Depois silêncio.

Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.

Eu me chamo Lena. Eu o amo. Só não amo as noites.

My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.

Brandt, 4º andar”.

Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”

I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.

Nesta noite, levantei-me. Peguei uma folha de papel e escrevi:

That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:

Caro vizinho do 4º andar, são três da manhã. Outras pessoas dormem a esta hora. Talvez você já tenha ouvido falar disso? L. Weber, 3º andar

Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor

Colei o bilhete na porta dele. Depois, corri rapidamente de volta para baixo. Meu coração batia forte. Mais alto que os passos dele.

I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.

Ele me deu meu pretzel.

In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.

“Você está com uma cara ruim hoje”, ele disse.

“You look terrible today,” he said.

“Obrigada”, eu disse. “Meu vizinho é um monstro.”

“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”

Ele riu. Eu não ri.

He laughed. I didn’t.

À noite, abri minha caixa de correio. Lá dentro havia um bilhete. Nenhuma conta, nenhuma propaganda. Uma resposta.

In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
