At three in the morning, it started again.
Buf. Apoi pași. Apoi un fluierat. Apoi ușa. Apoi liniște.
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
Nu-l cunosc. Nu l-am văzut niciodată. Pe cutia lui poștală scrie doar: „J. Brandt, etajul 4”.
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
L. Weber, etajul 3
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
Am lipit bilețelul pe ușa lui. Apoi am fugit repede înapoi jos. Inima mi-a bătut tare. Mai tare decât pașii lui.
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
Mi-a dat covrigul meu.
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
„Arătați rău astăzi”, a spus el.
“You look terrible today,” he said.
„Mulțumesc”, am spus eu. „Vecinul meu este un monstru.”
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
El a râs. Eu nu am râs.
He laughed. I didn’t.
Seara mi-am deschis cutia poștală. În ea se afla un bilețel. Nicio factură, nicio reclamă. Un răspuns.
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
