Gece saat üçte yine başladı.

At three in the morning, it started again.

Güm. Sonra adımlar. Sonra bir ıslık. Sonra kapı. Sonra sessizlik.

Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.

Adım Lena. Leipzig’de eski bir evde üçüncü katta oturuyorum. Buraya iki ay önce taşındım. Daire küçük ama aydınlık. Onu seviyorum. Sadece geceleri sevmiyorum.

My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.

Her gece saat üçte üstümdeki komşuyu duyuyorum. Onu tanımıyorum. Onu hiç görmedim. Posta kutusunda sadece “J. Brandt, 4. Kat” yazıyor.

Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”

Bir ofiste çalışıyorum. Saat sekizde bilgisayar başında oturuyorum. Altı hafta az uyuduktan sonra öfkeliydim. Çok öfkeli.

I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.

O gece ayağa kalktım. Bir kağıt parçası aldım ve yazdım:

That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:

4. kattaki sevgili komşum, saat gece üç. Diğer insanlar bu saatte uyuyor. Belki bunu duymuşsunuzdur? L. Weber, 3. Kat

Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor

Notu kapısına yapıştırdım. Sonra hızlıca aşağıya geri koştum. Kalbim yüksek sesle attı. Onun adımlarından daha yüksek.

I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.

Sabah her zamanki gibi köşedeki fırına gittim. Fırıncı genç, uzun ve her zaman biraz yorgun. Bana simidimi verdi.

In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.

“Bugün kötü görünüyorsunuz” dedi.

“You look terrible today,” he said.

“Teşekkürler” dedim. “Komşum bir canavar.”

“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”

Güldü. Ben gülmedim.

He laughed. I didn’t.

Akşam posta kutumu açtım. İçinde bir not vardı. Fatura yok, reklam yok. Bir cevap.

In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
