Ella ist acht Jahre alt. Sie schwimmt sehr gut. Sie schwimmt wie ein Fisch. Jeden Sommer ist Ella bei Oma Rosa am See.

Ella is eight years old. She swims very well. She swims like a fish. Every summer Ella stays with Grandma Rosa by the lake.

Der See ist groß und blau. Ella schwimmt jeden Tag.

The lake is big and blue. Ella swims every day. But Grandma Rosa never swims. She sits on a bench. She reads a book, she drinks tea, and she waves.

“Grandma, come into the water! The water is warm!” “No, thank you,” says Grandma. “I’d rather sit here.”

Jeden Tag fragt Ella. Und jeden Tag sagt Oma: „Nein danke.“

Every day Ella asks. And every day Grandma says, “No, thank you.”

On Thursday Ella sits next to Grandma on the bench. She is wet, and she is a little cold. “Grandma, why do you never swim?”

Oma ist still.

Grandma is quiet. Then she says softly: “Because I can’t swim.”

Ella macht große Augen. „Du kannst nicht schwimmen? Aber du bist eine Oma! Omas können alles!“

Ella’s eyes go wide. “You can’t swim? But you’re a grandma! Grandmas can do everything!”

Oma lacht. „Nein, Schatz.

Grandma laughs. “No, darling. I can bake cakes. I can knit socks. I can tell stories. But I can’t swim. And I’m a little afraid of the water.”

Ella denkt nach. Dann springt sie auf. „Oma! Ich habe eine Idee. Ich bin deine Lehrerin. Ich zeige dir alles!“

Ella thinks. Then she jumps up. “Grandma! I have an idea. I’ll be your teacher. I’ll show you everything!”
