Ella is eight years old. She swims very well. She swims like a fish. Every summer Ella stays with Grandma Rosa by the lake.

The lake is big and blue. Ella swims every day. But Grandma Rosa never swims. She sits on a bench. She reads a book, she drinks tea, and she waves.

«¡Abuela, ven al agua! ¡El agua está caliente!» «No, gracias», dice la abuela. «Prefiero sentarme aquí».

“Grandma, come into the water! The water is warm!” “No, thank you,” says Grandma. “I’d rather sit here.”

Every day Ella asks. And every day Grandma says, “No, thank you.”

On Thursday Ella sits next to Grandma on the bench. She is wet, and she is a little cold. “Grandma, why do you never swim?”

La abuela está en silencio. Luego dice en voz baja: «Porque no sé nadar».

Grandma is quiet. Then she says softly: “Because I can’t swim.”

Ella abre mucho los ojos. «¿No sabes nadar? ¡Pero eres una abuela! ¡Las abuelas saben hacer todo!»

Ella’s eyes go wide. “You can’t swim? But you’re a grandma! Grandmas can do everything!”

La abuela se ríe. «No, cariño.

Grandma laughs. “No, darling. I can bake cakes. I can knit socks. I can tell stories. But I can’t swim. And I’m a little afraid of the water.”

Ella piensa. Luego se levanta de un salto. «¡Abuela! Tengo una idea. Soy tu profesora. ¡Te enseño todo!»

Ella thinks. Then she jumps up. “Grandma! I have an idea. I’ll be your teacher. I’ll show you everything!”
