Platone è nato ad Atene, in una famiglia ricca e famosa, circa trent’anni dopo Socrate. La sua famiglia apparteneva alle famiglie più antiche della città, e la famiglia di sua madre risaliva a Solone, il grande legislatore.

Plato was born in Athens, into a rich and famous family, about thirty years after Socrates. His family belonged to the oldest families of the city, and his mother’s family went back to Solon, the great lawgiver.

Il suo vero nome era Aristocle. «Platone» era un soprannome, e significa «largo». La gente diceva che il nome veniva dalle sue spalle larghe e dal suo corpo forte. Era un lottatore, e anche bravo.

His real name was Aristocles. “Plato” was a nickname, and it means “broad”. People said that the name came from his broad shoulders and his strong body. He was a wrestler, and a good one.

Da giovane ha scritto poesie e opere teatrali. Aveva una mente brillante e un grande nome, e il futuro sembrava facile. Poi ha incontrato un uomo brutto e scalzo al mercato, e la sua vita è cambiata completamente.

As a young man he wrote poems and plays. He had a fine mind and a great name, and the future looked easy. Then he met an ugly, barefoot man in the market, and his life turned around.
