Die Pantoffeln
The Slippers
We are slippers. Grey, made of thick felt, far too big for any foot that slips into us. For years we have stood in rows outside the door of the Baroque Hall, and every day we glide over the old wooden floor so that it does not get scratched. We hear everything, because we are right at the bottom. And we remember every step, especially the steps that suddenly falter.
No sooner had Malin Rüesch pulled the heavy felt slippers over her trainers than she knew this outing would not be to her taste. The slippers were enormous and shuffled with every step. Anyone who tried to walk in them with dignity looked like a duck on black ice. Someone giggled behind her, and Malin, the class president of 6b, turned round with a stern look.
«Hier drinnen spricht man leise. Und man berührt nichts. Gar nichts.»
“Quiet, please,” whispered Mr Frei, their teacher, putting a finger to his lips. “In here we speak softly. And we touch nothing. Nothing at all.”
Then the heavy door, decorated with carvings, opened, and the whole class glided like a line of grey skaters into the hall of the Abbey Library of St. Gallen.
For a moment Malin even forgot the slippers. The hall was so high and so magnificent that it took her breath away. The bookcases of dark wood reached up to a gallery, above which painted clouds and angels floated. Thousands of leather spines gleamed golden in the light that fell through the tall windows. It smelled of wax, of old paper and of something sweetish that Malin couldn’t name. And it was quiet, not quiet like the classroom during a test, when a chair still creaked somewhere, but quiet like the bottom of a lake.
A slender woman with grey curls and glasses on a chain was waiting for them in the middle of the hall. “I am Dr Kälin,” she introduced herself in a hushed voice. “I work here as a librarian. Some of these books are over a thousand years old. Monks wrote them by hand, letter by letter, with goose quills and ink they mixed themselves.”
She led the class first to the mummy, which lay in a glass coffin in one corner of the hall. The children crowded round it, and Luca from the back row claimed he had seen a finger move. Dr Kälin smiled indulgently. “Schepenese hasn’t moved for over two thousand years,” she explained. “She is our quietest guest. Some visitors could learn something from her.”
Malin eagerly noted everything down in her exercise book, because Mr Frei had announced a talk about the visit, and she wanted, as always, to be the best. She had been class president for two years, and she organised the class kitty, the Christmas dinner and sports day with great conscientiousness. Anyone who wanted to know something asked Malin, and Malin almost always had an answer, even if she sometimes had to look it up first.
