Der Alarm in der Krypta
The Alarm in the Crypt
No sooner had Nico Keller laid his hand on the glass display case than the alarm went off. A shrill tone tore through the crypt of the Grossmünster, bounced off the low vaults and went straight to the bones of the pupils of class 6b. Nico snatched his hand back as if he had touched a hot hob. The case in front of him was empty.
Only a minute earlier the seal had lain inside it, a round disc of dark bronze, no bigger than a five-franc coin. Dr Hotz, the guide, had complained at the start that the lid of the case had been left unlocked since the morning “for maintenance” and the alarm switched off; it had only been switched back on shortly before the tour. Then she had explained to the class in an important voice that the lords of Zurich had used this seal more than seven hundred years ago to certify their charters. The disc showed three figures, Felix, Regula and their servant Exuperantius, the city’s patron saints, and each of them carried their own head in their hands. Most of the children had found it disgusting, but Nico had found it magnificent.
“Nobody move!” cried Dr Hotz. She had gone pale, and her voice was trembling.
The class froze, as quiet as mice. Only Selin Aydin, Nico’s best friend since kindergarten, craned her neck. Selin was small, quick and nobody’s fool, and she noticed things that escaped other people. Nico saw her gaze wander up to the narrow window high in the wall. A flap there was tilted open, and on the ledge outside sat a jet-black jackdaw with its head cocked, as if it wanted to judge the commotion down below.
Auf seinem Namensschild stand «A. Frick, Sicherheitstechnik».
Two minutes later a young man in a grey uniform came rushing down the stairs. His name badge read “A. Frick, Security Systems”. He switched off the alarm, bent over the case and gave a low whistle through his teeth. Nico noticed something red stuck under his fingernails, red paint perhaps. Odd for a technician, he thought fleetingly, and forgot it at once.
«Wer stand zuletzt hier?», erkundigte er sich.
“Who was standing here last?” he asked.
Twenty heads turned towards Nico. The colour rose in his face, and his hands went clammy. He had only looked inside, nothing more. Not again, he thought, not again like that time in third class. Dr Hotz eyed him suspiciously, as if she had known all along that there was something wrong with this boy.
“I only put my hand on the glass,” Nico stammered. “The seal was already gone.”
“Empty display cases don’t explain themselves,” Dr Hotz remarked sharply.
Herr Frick lächelte Nico freundlich zu, fast entschuldigend. «Keine Sorge, junger Mann. Das klären wir. Zeigst du mir kurz deinen Rucksack?»
Mr Frick gave Nico a friendly, almost apologetic smile. “Don’t worry, young man. We’ll sort this out. Could you just show me your rucksack?”
