Ella ist acht. Sie geht in die zweite Klasse. Ihre Lehrerin heißt Frau Sommer. Frau Sommer ist nett.

Ella is eight. She is in the second year at school. Her teacher is called Mrs Sommer. Mrs Sommer is nice.

Heute ist Montag. Neben Ella ist ein Platz frei. Da sitzt heute ein neuer Junge.

Today is Monday. There is a free seat next to Ella. Today a new boy is sitting there.

„Das ist Luca“, sagt Frau Sommer. „Luca kommt aus Italien. Er wohnt jetzt hier. Er spricht noch kein Deutsch.“

“This is Luca,” says Mrs Sommer. “Luca comes from Italy. He lives here now. He doesn’t speak any German yet.”

Luca hat schwarze Haare und eine blaue Jacke. Er sieht auf den Tisch. Er sagt nichts.

Luca has black hair and a blue jacket. He looks down at the desk. He says nothing.

Ella lächelt. „Hallo! Ich bin Ella.“

Ella smiles. “Hello! I’m Ella.”

Luca sieht Ella an. Er sagt etwas. Aber Ella versteht es nicht. Es klingt schön, wie ein Lied. Aber es ist Italienisch.

Luca looks at Ella. He says something. But Ella doesn’t understand it. It sounds nice, like a song. But it is Italian.

Die Stunde beginnt. Frau Sommer schreibt an die Tafel. Die Kinder lesen. Die Kinder schreiben. Luca schreibt nichts. Er sieht aus dem Fenster.

The lesson begins. Mrs Sommer writes on the board. The children read. The children write. Luca writes nothing. He looks out of the window.

Ella denkt: Luca ist traurig. Er ist neu. Er kennt niemand. Und er versteht nichts. Das ist schwer.

Ella thinks: Luca is sad. He is new. He doesn’t know anyone. And he doesn’t understand anything. That’s hard.

In der Pause spielen die Kinder auf dem Hof. Luca steht allein an der Wand.

At break time the children play in the playground. Luca stands alone by the wall.

Ella hat eine Idee. Sie holt Papier und einen Stift. Sie malt eine Sonne. Dann zeigt sie auf die Sonne. „Sonne“, sagt sie.

Ella has an idea. She fetches some paper and a pencil. She draws a sun. Then she points at the sun. “Sonne,” she says.

Luca sieht das Bild an. Dann lächelt er ein bisschen. „Sole“, sagt er.

Luca looks at the picture. Then he smiles a little. “Sole,” he says.

„Sole!“, sagt Ella. „Sonne ist Sole!“

“Sole!” says Ella. “Sonne is sole!”
