Morgen hat Mama Geburtstag. Emma und Ben haben einen Plan. Sie backen einen Kuchen. Einen Schokoladenkuchen! Mama liebt Schokolade.

Tomorrow is Mum’s birthday. Emma and Ben have a plan. They are going to bake a cake. A chocolate cake! Mum loves chocolate.

Papa hilft. Aber Papa kann nicht gut backen. Er kann gut Nudeln kochen. Und er kann gut Pizza bestellen.

Dad helps. But Dad isn’t good at baking. He is good at cooking pasta. And he is good at ordering pizza.

Mama ist heute nicht da. Sie ist bei Oma. Das ist gut, weil der Kuchen eine Überraschung ist.

Mum isn’t here today. She is at Grandma’s. That’s good, because the cake is a surprise.

Emma liest das Rezept. Sie ist neun und kann schon gut lesen. „Wir brauchen Mehl, Zucker, Eier, Butter, Milch und Schokolade.“

Emma reads the recipe. She is nine and can already read well. “We need flour, sugar, eggs, butter, milk and chocolate.”

Ben ist fünf. Er kann noch nicht lesen. Aber er kann gut rühren. „Ich rühre!“, ruft er.

Ben is five. He can’t read yet. But he is good at stirring. “I’ll stir!” he shouts.

Papa holt eine große Schüssel. Emma holt das Mehl. Ben holt die Eier. Ein Ei fällt auf den Boden. Platsch!

Dad fetches a big bowl. Emma fetches the flour. Ben fetches the eggs. One egg falls on the floor. Splat!

„Oh“, sagt Ben. „Das Ei ist kaputt.“ „Kein Problem“, sagt Papa. „Wir haben noch zehn Eier.“

“Oh,” says Ben. “The egg is broken.” “No problem,” says Dad. “We still have ten eggs.”

Emma liest weiter. „Jetzt Zucker. Dreihundert Gramm.“

Emma reads on. “Now sugar. Three hundred grams.”

Im Schrank stehen zwei Dosen. Beide Dosen sind weiß. Beide haben einen roten Deckel. „Papa, welche Dose ist der Zucker?“, fragt Ben.

There are two tins in the cupboard. Both tins are white. Both have a red lid. “Dad, which tin is the sugar?” asks Ben.

Papa telefoniert gerade. Er sieht nicht hin. „Die da“, sagt er.

Dad is on the phone just then. He doesn’t look. “That one,” he says.

Ben nimmt die Dose. Er gibt dreihundert Gramm in die Schüssel. Dann rührt er. Er rührt und rührt. Emma gibt die Schokolade dazu.

Ben takes the tin. He puts three hundred grams into the bowl. Then he stirs. He stirs and stirs. Emma adds the chocolate.

Der Kuchen kommt in den Ofen. Nach einer Stunde ist er fertig. Er ist braun und rund und groß. Die Küche riecht wunderbar.

The cake goes into the oven. After an hour it is ready. It is brown and round and big. The kitchen smells wonderful.
