Zehn Jahre lang bin ich nicht nach Hause gefahren. Und als ich endlich aus dem Zug gestiegen bin, hat mein eigener Onkel mich angeschaut und sofort auf seine Schuhe gesehen.

For ten years I didn’t go home. And when I finally got off the train, my own uncle looked at me and immediately stared down at his shoes.

„Lena“, hat Onkel Sepp gesagt. Nur das. Dann hat er meinen Koffer genommen und ist zum Auto gegangen.

“Lena,” said Uncle Sepp. Just that. Then he took my suitcase and walked to the car.

Der Bahnhof von Sankt Anna ist klein, nur ein Gleis und eine Bank. Hinter dem Dorf stehen die Berge, grau und weiß, genau wie früher. Ich habe gedacht, dass sich in zehn Jahren alles ändert. Aber hier hat sich fast nichts geändert. Nur ich.

The station in Sankt Anna is small, just one track and one bench. Behind the village stand the mountains, grey and white, exactly as before. I had thought that everything changes in ten years. But almost nothing had changed here. Except me.

Meine Schwester Katrin heiratet am Samstag. Sie hat mir vor drei Monaten eine Karte geschickt, mit einem Foto von ihr und einem Mann mit Bart. Auf die Rückseite hat sie geschrieben: Bitte komm. Niemand wird etwas sagen. Versprochen.

My sister Katrin is getting married on Saturday. Three months ago she sent me a card with a photo of her and a man with a beard. On the back she wrote: Please come. Nobody will say anything. I promise.

Niemand wird etwas sagen. Ich habe diesen Satz hundertmal gelesen, im Büro in Hamburg, in der U-Bahn, nachts im Bett. Er hat wie ein Trost geklungen. Jetzt, im Auto neben Onkel Sepp, hat er wie eine Drohung geklungen.

Nobody will say anything. I had read that sentence a hundred times, in the office in Hamburg, on the underground, in bed at night. It had sounded like comfort. Now, in the car next to Uncle Sepp, it sounded like a threat.

Wir sind durch das Dorf gefahren. Onkel Sepp hat das Radio lauter gemacht, genau in dem Moment, als wir an der Kirche vorbeigefahren sind. Ich habe gewusst, warum.

We drove through the village. Uncle Sepp turned the radio up at exactly the moment we drove past the church. I knew why.

Vor zehn Jahren habe ich in dieser Kirche heiraten sollen. Die Gäste sind gekommen, die Musik hat gespielt, Tobias hat vor dem Altar gewartet. Und ich bin in ein Taxi gestiegen und zum Bahnhof gefahren, im weißen Kleid.

Ten years ago I was supposed to get married in that church. The guests came, the music played, Tobias waited at the altar. And I got into a taxi and went to the station, in my white dress.

Seitdem hat niemand in meiner Familie mit mir über diesen Tag gesprochen. Nicht am Telefon, nicht in Briefen. Auch nicht, als mein Vater gestorben ist.

Since then, nobody in my family has talked to me about that day. Not on the phone, not in letters. Not even when my father died.

Vor dem Haus meiner Mutter hat Onkel Sepp den Motor ausgemacht. Er hat lange auf das Lenkrad geschaut.

In front of my mother’s house Uncle Sepp switched off the engine. He looked at the steering wheel for a long time.

„Eins musst du wissen“, hat er dann gesagt. „Tobias spielt am Samstag in der Musikkapelle. Trompete. Katrin hat ihn nicht ausladen können.“

“There’s one thing you need to know,” he said then. “Tobias is playing in the village band on Saturday. Trumpet. Katrin couldn’t uninvite him.”

Dann ist er ausgestiegen, und ich habe allein im Auto gesessen, mit klopfendem Herzen.

Then he got out, and I sat alone in the car, my heart pounding.
