At three in the morning, it started again.
Bumm. Dann Schritte. Dann ein Pfeifen. Dann die Tür. Dann Ruhe.
Boom. Then footsteps. Then whistling. Then the door. Then silence.
My name is Lena. I live on the third floor of an old building in Leipzig. I moved in two months ago. The flat is small but bright. I love it. It’s just the nights I don’t love.
Brandt, 4. Stock“.
Every night at three I hear the neighbour above me. I don’t know him. I have never seen him. His mailbox just says: “J. Brandt, 4th floor.”
I work in an office. At eight o’clock I’m at my computer. After six weeks of very little sleep, I was angry. Very angry.
That night I got up. I took a sheet of paper and wrote:
Lieber Nachbar im 4. Stock, es ist drei Uhr nachts. Andere Menschen schlafen um diese Zeit. Vielleicht haben Sie schon davon gehört? L. Weber, 3. Stock
Dear neighbour on the 4th floor, it is three in the morning. Other people sleep at this time. Maybe you’ve heard of it? L. Weber, 3rd floor
I stuck the note on his door. Then I ran quickly back downstairs. My heart was pounding. Louder than his footsteps.
In the morning I went to the bakery on the corner, as always. The baker is young, tall and always a little tired. He handed me my pretzel.
“You look terrible today,” he said.
„Danke“, habe ich gesagt. „Mein Nachbar ist ein Monster.“
“Thanks,” I said. “My neighbour is a monster.”
Er hat gelacht. Ich habe nicht gelacht.
He laughed. I didn’t.
Am Abend habe ich meinen Briefkasten geöffnet. Darin hat ein Zettel gelegen. Keine Rechnung, keine Werbung. Eine Antwort.
In the evening I opened my mailbox. There was a note inside. Not a bill, not an advert. A reply.
