The Boy Who Cried Wolf

The Æsop for Children The Shepherd Boy & the Wolf A Shepherd Boy tended his master’s Sheep near a dark forest not far from the village. Soon he found life in the pasture very dull.

All he could do to amuse himself was to talk to his dog or play on his shepherd’s pipe.

Alles, was er tun konnte, um sich zu unterhalten, war, mit seinem Hund zu sprechen oder auf seiner Schäferpfeife zu spielen.

One day as he sat watching the Sheep and the quiet forest, and thinking what he would do should he see a Wolf, he thought of a plan to amuse himself.

Eines Tages, als er die Schafe und den stillen Wald beobachtete und darüber nachdachte, was er tun würde, wenn er einen Wolf sähe, kam ihm ein Plan zur Unterhaltung.

His Master had told him to call for help should a Wolf attack the flock, and the Villagers would drive it away.

Sein Herr hatte ihm gesagt, er solle um Hilfe rufen, wenn ein Wolf den Schwarm angreife, und die Dorfbewohner würden ihn verscheuchen.

So now, though he had not seen anything that even looked like a Wolf, he ran toward the village shouting at the top of his voice, “Wolf! Wolf!”

Also rannte er nun, obwohl er nichts gesehen hatte, das auch nur im Entferntesten wie ein Wolf aussah, zum Dorf und rief mit lauter Stimme: “Wolf! Wolf!”

As he expected, the Villagers who heard the cry dropped their work and ran in great excitement to the pasture. But when they got there they found the Boy doubled up with laughter at the trick he had played on them.

Wie erwartet, ließen die Dorfbewohner, die den Schrei hörten, ihre Arbeit fallen und rannten in großer Aufregung zur Weide. Doch als sie dort ankamen, fanden sie den Jungen vor Lachen über den Streich, den er ihnen gespielt hatte, gebeugt.

A few days later the Shepherd Boy again shouted, “Wolf! Wolf!” Again the Villagers ran to help him, only to be laughed at again.

Ein paar Tage später rief der Schafhirte erneut: “Wolf! Wolf!” Wieder rannten die Dorfbewohner ihm zu Hilfe, nur um wieder ausgelacht zu werden.

Then one evening as the sun was setting behind the forest and the shadows were creeping out over the pasture, a Wolf really did spring from the underbrush and fall upon the Sheep.

Dann, eines Abends, als die Sonne hinter dem Wald unterging und die Schatten über die Weide krochen, sprang wirklich ein Wolf aus dem Unterholz und fiel über die Schafe her.

In terror the Boy ran toward the village shouting “Wolf! Wolf!” But though the Villagers heard the cry, they did not run to help him as they had before. “He cannot fool us again,” they said.

In Panik rannte der Junge zum Dorf und rief: “Wolf! Wolf!” Doch obwohl die Dorfbewohner den Schrei hörten, rannten sie ihm nicht zu Hilfe, wie sie es zuvor getan hatten. “Er kann uns nicht noch einmal täuschen”, sagten sie.

The Wolf killed a great many of the Boy’s sheep and then slipped away into the forest.

Der Wolf tötete viele der Schafe des Jungen und schlüpfte dann in den Wald davon.
