Ich heiße Paula, und ich habe einmal einen Käse gestohlen. Na ja, nicht ganz. Ich habe einen Koffer genommen. Den falschen Koffer.

My name is Paula, and I once stole a cheese. Well, not exactly. I took a suitcase. The wrong suitcase.

Das ist im März passiert, am Bahnhof in Frankfurt. Mein Zug ist fast eine Stunde zu spät gekommen. Ich bin müde gewesen und hungrig.

It happened in March, at the station in Frankfurt. My train was almost an hour late. I was tired and hungry.

Am nächsten Morgen habe ich ein wichtiges Gespräch gehabt. Ein Vorstellungsgespräch bei Brandt Feinkost. Das ist eine alte Firma für Käse, Wurst und Wein. Dort habe ich unbedingt arbeiten wollen. Zwei Jahre lang habe ich Bewerbungen geschrieben. Das ist meine Chance gewesen.

The next morning I had an important meeting. A job interview at Brandt Feinkost. It’s an old company for cheese, sausage and wine. I really wanted to work there. I had been writing applications for two years. This was my chance.

Im Zug hat mein Koffer über mir gelegen. Ein grauer Koffer, klein, mit Rollen. So habe ich gedacht. In Frankfurt habe ich ihn schnell genommen und bin aus dem Zug gelaufen.

On the train my suitcase lay on the rack above me. A grey suitcase, small, with wheels. Or so I thought. In Frankfurt I grabbed it quickly and ran off the train.

Im Hotel habe ich den Koffer auf das Bett gelegt und geöffnet. Und dann habe ich lange nichts gesagt.

At the hotel I put the suitcase on the bed and opened it. And then, for a long time, I said nothing.

Da ist keine Kleidung gewesen. Kein Anzug, keine Bluse, keine Zahnbürste. In dem Koffer hat ein Käse gelegen. Ein großer, runder, gelber Käse, so groß wie ein Autoreifen. Na, fast.

There were no clothes. No suit, no blouse, no toothbrush. Inside the suitcase lay a cheese. A big, round, yellow cheese, as big as a car tyre. Well, almost.

Neben dem Käse hat ein Umschlag gelegen. Ich habe ihn geöffnet. Darin ist Geld gewesen. Viel Geld. Ich habe gezählt: dreitausend Euro.

Next to the cheese lay an envelope. I opened it. There was money inside. A lot of money. I counted it: three thousand euros.

Und ein Zettel. Jemand hat mit der Hand geschrieben:

And a note. Someone had written by hand:

Samstag, 18 Uhr. Er darf nichts wissen. Niemand darf den Käse sehen!

Saturday, 6 p.m. He must not know anything. Nobody may see the cheese!

Ich habe den Käse angesehen. Der Käse hat mich angesehen. Na gut, Käse hat keine Augen. Aber so hat es sich angefühlt.

I looked at the cheese. The cheese looked at me. All right, cheese has no eyes. But that’s how it felt.

Dann hat es im Koffer geklingelt.

Then something inside the suitcase started ringing.
