El gigante egoísta

Cada tarde, al salir de la escuela, los niños solían ir a jugar al jardín del gigante.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.

Era un jardín grande y encantador, con una hierba verde y suave.

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass.

Aquí y allá, sobre la hierba, había hermosas flores como estrellas, y doce melocotoneros que en primavera estallaban en delicadas flores de color rosa y perla, y en otoño daban frutos suculentos.

Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit.

Los pájaros se posaban en los árboles y cantaban tan dulcemente que los niños solían interrumpir sus juegos para escucharlos. «¡Qué felices somos aquí!», se gritaban unos a otros.

The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. “How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.

Un día, el gigante regresó. Había ido a visitar a su amigo el ogro de Cornualles y se había quedado con él siete años.

One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years.

Al terminar los siete años, ya había dicho todo lo que tenía que decir, pues su conversación era limitada, y decidió regresar a su propio castillo. Cuando llegó, vio a los niños jugando en el jardín.

After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

«¿Qué hacéis aquí?», gritó con voz muy ronca, y los niños salieron corriendo.

“What are you doing here?” he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

«Mi jardín es mi jardín», dijo el gigante; «cualquiera puede entender eso, y no permitiré que nadie juegue en él más que yo». Así que construyó un muro alto a su alrededor y puso un cartel.

“My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant; “any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

Era un gigante muy egoísta.

He was a very selfish Giant.

Los pobres niños ya no tenían dónde jugar. Intentaron jugar en la carretera, pero estaba muy polvorienta y llena de piedras duras, y no les gustó.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it.

Solían vagar alrededor del alto muro cuando terminaban sus lecciones y hablar del hermoso jardín que había dentro. «Qué felices éramos allí», se decían unos a otros.

They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there,” they said to each other.
