पहली रात मुझे लगा कि यह कोई तकनीकी गड़बड़ी है। दूसरी रात मुझे लगा कि कोई मज़ाक कर रहा है। तीसरी रात मुझे डर लगना शुरू हो गया।
On the first night I thought it was a mistake. On the second night I thought someone was playing a joke. On the third night I started to be afraid.
लेकिन बेहतर होगा कि मैं शुरू से बताऊँ। मेरा नाम योनास है, मैं उनतीस साल का हूँ, और अक्टूबर में मुझे होटल लिंडे में नाइट पोर्टर की नौकरी मिली थी। होटल लिंडे बहुत छोटा है: चार मंज़िलें, बाईस कमरे, और क्रॉयत्सबर्ग की एक शांत सड़क पर बना पुराना मकान। यहाँ आने वाले मेहमान ज़्यादातर ऐसे पर्यटक होते हैं जो कम ख़र्च करना चाहते हैं, या फिर ऐसे व्यापारी जिन्हें अगली सुबह जल्दी हवाई अड्डे जाना होता है।
But I’d better tell it from the beginning. My name is Jonas, I’m twenty-nine years old, and in October I got a job as night porter at the Hotel Linde. The Hotel Linde is small: four floors, twenty-two rooms, an old building on a quiet street in Kreuzberg. The guests are mostly tourists who don’t want to spend much money, or business people who have to get to the airport early the next morning.
मैंने यह नौकरी ख़ुशी-ख़ुशी ले ली, क्योंकि मुझे वैसे भी रात में अच्छी नींद नहीं आती। इसके अलावा, मैं पिछले तीन साल से अपनी डॉक्टरेट की थीसिस लिख रहा हूँ, और रिसेप्शन पर रात में इतनी शांति होती है कि काम बहुत अच्छे से हो सकता है। कम से कम मेरी मालकिन, फ़्राउ केसलेर ने तो यही कहा था—साठ के आसपास की एक महिला, जिनके छोटे-छोटे भूरे बाल थे और जिनकी नज़र से कुछ नहीं छुपता था।
I was glad to take the job, because I don’t sleep well at night anyway. Besides, I’ve been writing my doctoral thesis for three years, and at night the reception is so quiet that you can work well. At least, that’s what the boss said, Frau Kessler, a woman of about sixty with short grey hair and a look that sees everything.
“यहाँ शायद ही कभी कुछ होता है,” पहली शाम उन्होंने मुझे समझाया। “कभी-कभी कोई मेहमान देर से हवाई अड्डे से आता है। कभी कोई मेहमान शराब पिए होता है। ऐसे में आप विनम्र रहिए और ज़रूरत पड़े तो पुलिस को बुला लीजिए। और एक बात: तहख़ाने में मत जाइएगा। वहाँ नीचे पुराना हीटर लगा है, और वह ख़तरनाक है।”
“Almost nothing ever happens,” she explained to me on the first evening. “Sometimes a guest arrives late from the airport. Sometimes a guest is drunk. Then you stay friendly and call the police if necessary. And one more thing: don’t go into the basement. The old heating system is down there, and it’s dangerous.”
मैंने सिर हिला दिया। मैंने इस पर कोई ख़ास ध्यान नहीं दिया।
I nodded. I didn’t think anything of it.
पहली रात, ठीक २:१३ बजे, रिसेप्शन का फ़ोन बजा। वह एक पुराना फ़ोन था, सलेटी और भारी, जिसकी एक छोटी-सी हरी स्क्रीन थी। स्क्रीन पर मैंने उस कमरे का नंबर देखा जहाँ से फ़ोन आ रहा था। वहाँ लिखा था: १३।
On the first night, at exactly 2:13, the phone at reception rang. It was an old phone, grey and heavy, with a small green display. On the display I could see the number of the room the call was coming from. It said: 13.
मैंने दीवार पर लगी सूची देखी। कमरा ११, कमरा १२, कमरा १४। होटल लिंडे में कमरा नंबर १३ है ही नहीं। बहुत से होटलों में यह कमरा नहीं होता, क्योंकि मेहमान अंधविश्वासी होते हैं।
I looked at the list on the wall. Room 11, room 12, room 14. The Hotel Linde has no room 13. Many hotels don’t, because guests are superstitious.
फ़ोन लगातार बजता रहा। मैंने रिसीवर उठा लिया।
The phone kept ringing. I picked up the receiver.
