1. Klucz
1. The Key
Codziennie rano o 8:15 otwierają się drzwi mojej kawiarni. I codziennie rano wchodzi mały pies. Sam. Nikogo przy nim nie ma. A w jego obroży zawsze tkwi coś nowego.
Every morning at 8:15, the door of my café opens. And every morning a small dog walks in. Alone. Nobody is with him. And there is always something new tucked into his collar.
Ale opowiem od początku. Mam na imię Anna. Mam 34 lata i małą kawiarnię na Lindenstraße. Kiedyś była tu piekarnia. Dom jest stary, okna są duże, a w piwnicy wciąż stoi stary piec.
But let me start at the beginning. My name is Anna. I’m 34, and I have a small café on Lindenstraße. It used to be a bakery. The building is old, the windows are big, and the old oven still stands in the cellar.
Otworzyłam kawiarnię rok temu. Zainwestowałam dużo pieniędzy. Ale nie przychodziło dość gości. W październiku położyłam wszystkie rachunki na stole i policzyłam. Wynik był jasny: jeszcze dwa miesiące i muszę zamknąć.
I opened the café a year ago. I put a lot of money into it. But not enough customers came. In October I laid all the bills out on the table and did the maths. The answer was clear: two more months, and then I would have to close.
W pewien poniedziałek w październiku pies przyszedł po raz pierwszy. Była dokładnie 8:15. Wiem to dokładnie, bo stary zegar nad ladą bije bardzo głośno.
On a Monday in October, the dog came for the first time. It was exactly 8:15. I know that for sure, because the old clock above the counter chimes very loudly.
Pies był mały i brązowy, tylko jedno ucho ma białe. Spojrzał na mnie. Potem usiadł przed ladą. Całkiem spokojnie. Jak gość.
The dog was small and brown, with just one white ear. He looked at me. Then he sat down in front of the counter. Perfectly calm. Like a customer.
„Cześć” – powiedziałam. – „Gdzie jest twój człowiek?”
“Hello,” I said. “Where’s your person, then?”
Pies nie zaszczekał. Tylko czekał. Wtedy coś zobaczyłam. W jego czerwonej obroży tkwił klucz. Stary klucz z metalu, mały i ciężki.
The dog didn’t bark. He just waited. Then I noticed something. There was a key tucked into his red collar. An old metal key, small and heavy.
Wzięłam klucz. Pies zamerdał ogonem. Potem wstał i po prostu znowu wyszedł.
I took the key. The dog wagged his tail. Then he stood up and simply walked back out.
Pobiegłam szybko do drzwi. Ale ulica była pusta. Tylko po drugiej stronie w oknie stał stary mężczyzna. Pan Weber. Mieszka tam od wielu lat. Jeszcze nigdy nie wszedł do mojej kawiarni. Ani razu.
I ran to the door. But the street was empty. Only on the other side, an old man was standing at his window. Mr Weber. He has lived there for many years. He has never once come into my café. Not a single time.
Spojrzał na mnie. Potem zasunął zasłonę.
He looked at me. Then he pulled the curtain shut.
Schowałam klucz do kieszeni. Przez cały dzień go czułam, ciężki i zimny. Jakie drzwi otwiera ten klucz? I kto przysyła mi psa?
I put the key in my pocket. All day long I could feel it there, heavy and cold. Which door does this key open? And who is sending me a dog?
