크리스마스 이틀 뒤 아침이었다. 나는 베이커가 221B에 있는 친구 셜록 홈즈의 방으로 그를 만나러 갔다. 나는 그에게 즐거운 크리스마스를 빌어주고 싶었다. 홈즈는 탐정이었고, 사람들은 런던 전역에서 이상한 문제를 가지고 그를 찾아왔다. 나는 의사이고, 이름은 왓슨이다.
It was the second morning after Christmas. I went to see my friend Sherlock Holmes at his rooms in 221B Baker Street. I wanted to wish him a happy Christmas. Holmes was a detective, and people came to him with strange problems from all over London. I am a doctor, and my name is Watson.
홈즈는 자주색 가운을 입고 소파에 누워 있었다. 그의 옆에는 아침 신문이 한 더미 쌓여 있었다. 소파 옆에는 나무 의자가 있었다. 아주 오래된 검은 모자가 의자 등받이에 걸려 있었고, 렌즈가 의자 위에 놓여 있었다. 렌즈는 작은 물건을 크게 보이게 만드는 둥근 유리다.
Holmes was lying on the sofa in a purple dressing gown. There was a pile of morning newspapers next to him. There was a wooden chair beside the sofa. A very old black hat hung on the back of the chair, and a lens lay on the seat. A lens is a round glass that makes small things look big.
“바쁘시네요.” 내가 말했다. “어쩌면 제가 일을 방해하고 있나 봐요.”
“You are busy,” I said. “Maybe I am stopping your work.”
“전혀 아니에요.” 홈즈가 대답했다. “여기에 친구가 와서 기뻐요. 이건 그냥 작은 일이에요.” 그가 엄지손가락으로 낡은 모자를 가리켰다. “하지만 흥미로워요.”
“Not at all,” Holmes answered. “I am glad to have a friend here. It is only a small thing.” He pointed at the old hat with his thumb. “But it is interesting.”
나는 그의 안락의자에 앉아서 난롯불에 손을 녹였다. 밖은 몹시 추웠고, 창문에는 얼음이 얼어 있었다.
I sat down in his armchair and warmed my hands at the fire. Outside it was freezing, and there was ice on the windows.
“이 모자에 어두운 사연이 있는 것 같아요.” 내가 말했다. “어쩌면 범인을 잡는 데 도움이 될지도 몰라요.”
“I think this hat has a dark story,” I said. “Maybe it will help you catch a criminal.”
“아니에요, 아니에요. 범죄는 없어요.” 홈즈가 말하고 웃었다. “이 도시에는 사백만 명이 모여 살아요. 그래서 이상하고 작은 일이 아주 많이 일어나지만, 그중에 많은 일은 범죄가 아니에요.”
“No, no. No crime,” said Holmes, and he laughed. “Four million people live close together in this city. So many strange little things happen, and many of them are not crimes.”
“그건 맞아요.” 내가 말했다. “내 공책에 있는 당신 사건들 중에도 범죄가 아닌 것들이 많지요.”
“That is true,” I said. “Many of your cases in my notes have no crime in them.”
“맞아요. 그리고 이 작은 문제도 그런 일 중 하나예요. 피터슨 수위 알지요?”
“Exactly. And I think this small problem is another one of them. You know Peterson, the commissionaire?”
나는 피터슨을 잘 알았다. 그는 편지를 전하고 문을 지키는 제복 입은 수위였다. 그는 또 아주 정직한 사람이었다. “네.” 내가 말했다.
I knew Peterson well. He was a commissionaire, a man in uniform who carries messages and watches doors. He was also a very honest man. “Yes,” I said.
“피터슨이 나한테 이 모자를 가져왔어요.”
“Peterson brought me this hat.”
“그 사람 모자예요?”
“Is it his hat?”
“아니에요, 아니에요. 그가 주웠어요. 주인이 누구인지 아무도 몰라요. 크리스마스 아침에 크고 살찐 거위와 함께 왔어요.”
“No, no. He found it. Nobody knows the owner. It arrived on Christmas morning with a good fat goose.”
