The Hat and the Goose

Era a doua dimineață după Crăciun. Am mers să-l văd pe prietenul meu Sherlock Holmes la locuința lui din strada Baker numărul 221B. Am vrut să-i urez un Crăciun fericit. Holmes era detectiv, iar oamenii au venit la el cu probleme ciudate din toată Londra. Eu sunt doctor, iar numele meu este Watson.

It was the second morning after Christmas. I went to see my friend Sherlock Holmes at his rooms in 221B Baker Street. I wanted to wish him a happy Christmas. Holmes was a detective, and people came to him with strange problems from all over London. I am a doctor, and my name is Watson.

Holmes a stat întins pe canapea într-un halat violet. Lângă el era un teanc de ziare de dimineață. Lângă canapea era un scaun de lemn. O pălărie neagră foarte veche a atârnat pe spătarul scaunului, iar pe șezut a stat o lupă. O lupă este o sticlă rotundă care face lucrurile mici să pară mari.

Holmes was lying on the sofa in a purple dressing gown. There was a pile of morning newspapers next to him. There was a wooden chair beside the sofa. A very old black hat hung on the back of the chair, and a lens lay on the seat. A lens is a round glass that makes small things look big.

„Ești ocupat”, am spus eu. „Poate că-ți întrerup munca.”

“You are busy,” I said. “Maybe I am stopping your work.”

„Deloc”, a răspuns Holmes. „Mă bucur să am un prieten aici. Este doar un lucru mărunt.” A arătat spre pălăria veche cu degetul mare. „Dar este interesant.”

“Not at all,” Holmes answered. “I am glad to have a friend here. It is only a small thing.” He pointed at the old hat with his thumb. “But it is interesting.”

M-am așezat în fotoliul lui și mi-am încălzit mâinile la foc. Afară a fost un ger cumplit și era gheață pe ferestre.

I sat down in his armchair and warmed my hands at the fire. Outside it was freezing, and there was ice on the windows.

„Cred că această pălărie are o poveste întunecată”, am spus eu. „Poate că te va ajuta să prinzi un infractor.”

“I think this hat has a dark story,” I said. “Maybe it will help you catch a criminal.”

„Nu, nu. Nicio crimă”, a spus Holmes și a râs. „Patru milioane de oameni trăiesc unii lângă alții în acest oraș. Se întâmplă atâtea mici lucruri ciudate, iar multe dintre ele nu sunt crime.”

“No, no. No crime,” said Holmes, and he laughed. “Four million people live close together in this city. So many strange little things happen, and many of them are not crimes.”

„Așa este”, am spus eu. „Multe dintre cazurile tale din notele mele nu conțin nicio crimă.”

“That is true,” I said. “Many of your cases in my notes have no crime in them.”

„Exact. Și cred că această mică problemă este o alta dintre ele. Îl știi pe Peterson, comisionarul?”

“Exactly. And I think this small problem is another one of them. You know Peterson, the commissionaire?”

I knew Peterson well. He was a commissionaire, a man in uniform who carries messages and watches doors. He was also a very honest man. “Yes,” I said.

„Peterson mi-a adus această pălărie.”

“Peterson brought me this hat.”

„Este pălăria lui?”

“Is it his hat?”

„Nu, nu. A găsit-o. Nimeni nu-l știe pe proprietar. A sosit în dimineața de Crăciun cu o gâscă bună și grasă.”

“No, no. He found it. Nobody knows the owner. It arrived on Christmas morning with a good fat goose.”
