しかし、水差しは背が高く、口が狭かったため、カラスはどんなに頑張っても水に届きませんでした。かわいそうなカラスは、喉の渇きで死んでしまうのではないかと思いました。

But the pitcher was high and had a narrow neck, and no matter how he tried, the Crow could not reach the water. The poor thing felt as if he must die of thirst.

その時、カラスはひらめきました。小石を拾い上げると、一つずつ水差しの中に落としていったのです。小石を入れるたびに水は少しずつ上がり、ついにカラスが飲める高さまで来ました。

Then an idea came to him. Picking up some small pebbles, he dropped them into the pitcher one by one. With each pebble the water rose a little higher until at last it was near enough so he could drink.
