여우와 두루미

어느 날 여우는 늘 비웃던 두루미의 특이한 겉모습을 떠올리며, 두루미를 골려 주고 즐기려는 계획을 생각해 냈다.

The Fox one day thought of a plan to amuse himself at the expense of the Stork, at whose odd appearance he was always laughing.

“오늘 우리 집에 와서 같이 저녁 먹어요.” 여우는 자신이 벌일 장난을 생각하며 혼자 미소를 짓고 두루미에게 말했다. 두루미는 기꺼이 초대를 받아들였고, 제시간에 몹시 배가 고픈 상태로 도착했다.

“You must come and dine with me today,” he said to the Stork, smiling to himself at the trick he was going to play. The Stork gladly accepted the invitation and arrived in good time and with a very good appetite.

저녁 식사로 여우는 수프를 내놓았다. 하지만 수프는 매우 얕은 접시에 담겨 나왔고, 두루미가 할 수 있는 일이라고는 부리 끝을 살짝 적시는 것뿐이었다. 두루미는 수프를 단 한 방울도 먹을 수 없었다.

For dinner the Fox served soup. But it was set out in a very shallow dish, and all the Stork could do was to wet the very tip of his bill. Not a drop of soup could he get.

하지만 여우는 수프를 쉽게 핥아먹었고, 두루미의 실망감을 더 크게 만들려고 아주 맛있게 먹는 척을 했다.

But the Fox lapped it up easily, and, to increase the disappointment of the Stork, made a great show of enjoyment.

배가 고팠던 두루미는 그 장난에 몹시 불쾌했지만, 침착하고 성격이 차분한 친구였기에 화를 내 보아야 좋을 것이 없다고 생각했다. 대신 얼마 지나지 않아, 두루미는 답례로 여우를 자신의 저녁 식사에 초대했다.

The hungry Stork was much displeased at the trick, but he was a calm, even-tempered fellow and saw no good in flying into a rage. Instead, not long afterward, he invited the Fox to dine with him in turn.

여우는 약속된 시간에 맞춰 정확히 도착했고, 두루미는 식욕을 돋우는 냄새가 물씬 풍기는 생선 요리를 대접했다. 하지만 음식은 목이 아주 좁고 긴 항아리에 담겨 나왔다.

The Fox arrived promptly at the time that had been set, and the Stork served a fish dinner that had a very appetizing smell. But it was served in a tall jar with a very narrow neck.

두루미는 긴 부리로 음식을 쉽게 먹을 수 있었지만, 여우가 할 수 있는 일이라고는 항아리 겉면을 핥고 맛있는 냄새를 킁킁거리며 맡는 것뿐이었다. 그리고 여우가 화를 내자 두루미는 침착하게 말했다.

The Stork could easily get at the food with his long bill, but all the Fox could do was to lick the outside of the jar, and sniff at the delicious odor. And when the Fox lost his temper, the Stork said calmly:

“자신도 똑같은 대접을 견뎌 낼 수 없다면, 이웃에게 장난을 치지 마세요.”

Do not play tricks on your neighbors unless you can stand the same treatment yourself.
