Büyükbabam pazartesi günü öldü. Cuma günü bir avukat bana bir anahtar verdi. Ve bahçesinin bir haritasını.

My grandfather died on Monday. On Friday a lawyer gave me a key. And a map of his garden.

Cenaze küçüktü. Yağmur yağdı. Annem ağlamadı. Karin Hala sürekli cep telefonuna baktı.

The funeral was small. It rained. My mother didn’t cry. Aunt Karin looked at her phone the whole time.

Cenazeden sonra hepimiz büyükbabamın evine gittik. Ev Bamberg’de küçük bir sokağın sonunda duruyor. Ev eski ama bahçe büyük ve güzeldi. Büyükbabam neredeyse her gün bahçede çalıştı. Hep şöyle derdi: “Toprak yalan söylemez.”

After the funeral we all went to Grandpa’s house. The house is at the end of a little street in Bamberg. It’s old, but the garden is big and beautiful. Grandpa worked in the garden almost every day. He always said, “The soil doesn’t lie.”

Küçüklüğümden beri her yaz sık sık onun yanındaydım. Birlikte elma topladık ve domates suladık. Büyükbabam çok konuşmazdı. Ama bahçede hep mutluydu.

I spent a lot of time with him, every summer, ever since I was little. We picked apples and watered tomatoes together. Grandpa didn’t talk much. But in the garden he was always happy.

Avukatın adı Bay Vogel. Büyük gözlüklü küçük bir adam. Mutfakta bana kahverengi bir zarf verdi.

The lawyer is called Mr Vogel. He’s a small man with big glasses. In the kitchen he gave me a brown envelope.

“Bu sadece sizin için, Bayan Weber” dedi sessizce. “Büyükbabanız böyle istedi.”

“This is only for you, Ms Weber,” he said quietly. “Your grandfather wanted it that way.”

Zarfın içinde küçük, eski bir anahtar buldum. Ve bir kağıt parçası. Büyükbabam bahçeyi kurşun kalemle çizdi: ev, elma ağacı, tarhlar, yüksek çit. Çitin yanına kırmızı bir çarpı işareti koydu.

In the envelope I found a small old key. And a sheet of paper. Grandpa had drawn the garden in pencil: the house, the apple tree, the flower beds, the tall hedge. Next to the hedge he had made a red cross.

Çizimin altına üç kelime yazdı: Karin için değil.

Under the drawing he had written three words: Not for Karin.

Zarfı çabuk kapattım. Ama Karin Hala bunu gördü.

I quickly closed the envelope. But Aunt Karin saw it.

“Elindeki ne, Lena?” diye sordu.

“What have you got there, Lena?” she asked.

“Hiçbir şey. Sadece büyükbabamdan bir mektup.”

“Nothing. Just a letter from Grandpa.”

Gülümsedi. Ama gözleri gülümsemedi.

She smiled. But her eyes didn’t smile.
