회색 가방

내 이름은 파울라다. 나는 예전에 치즈를 훔친 적이 있다. 뭐, 정확히 말하면 훔친 건 아니다. 가방을 하나 가져갔다. 남의 가방을.

My name is Paula, and I once stole a cheese. Well, not exactly. I took a suitcase. The wrong suitcase.

3월에 프랑크푸르트 기차역에서 있었던 일이다. 기차가 거의 한 시간이나 늦게 도착했다. 나는 피곤하고 배가 고팠다.

It happened in March, at the station in Frankfurt. My train was almost an hour late. I was tired and hungry.

다음 날 아침에 중요한 면접이 있었다. 브란트 파인코스트라는 곳이었다. 치즈와 소시지, 와인을 파는 오래된 회사다. 나는 거기서 꼭 일하고 싶었다. 2년 동안 지원서를 썼다. 나에게는 큰 기회였다.

The next morning I had an important meeting. A job interview at Brandt Feinkost. It’s an old company for cheese, sausage and wine. I really wanted to work there. I had been writing applications for two years. This was my chance.

기차 안에서 내 가방은 내 머리 위 선반에 있었다. 회색 가방이었고, 작고 바퀴가 달려 있었다. 적어도 나는 그렇게 생각했다. 프랑크푸르트에서 나는 서둘러 가방을 들고 기차에서 내렸다.

On the train my suitcase lay on the rack above me. A grey suitcase, small, with wheels. Or so I thought. In Frankfurt I grabbed it quickly and ran off the train.

호텔에서 가방을 침대 위에 올려놓고 열었다. 그리고 한참 동안 아무 말도 할 수 없었다.

At the hotel I put the suitcase on the bed and opened it. And then, for a long time, I said nothing.

옷은 없었다. 정장도, 블라우스도, 칫솔도 없었다. 가방 안에는 치즈가 들어 있었다. 자동차 바퀴만큼 크고, 둥글고, 노란 치즈였다. 뭐, 거의 그만큼.

There were no clothes. No suit, no blouse, no toothbrush. Inside the suitcase lay a cheese. A big, round, yellow cheese, as big as a car tyre. Well, almost.

치즈 옆에는 봉투가 하나 있었다. 열어 보니 돈이 들어 있었다. 아주 많은 돈이었다. 세어 보니 3천 유로였다.

Next to the cheese lay an envelope. I opened it. There was money inside. A lot of money. I counted it: three thousand euros.

그리고 쪽지가 한 장 있었다. 누군가 손으로 쓴 쪽지였다.

And a note. Someone had written by hand:

토요일, 6시. 그는 아무것도 몰라야 해. 아무도 치즈를 보면 안 돼!

Saturday, 6 p.m. He must not know anything. Nobody may see the cheese!

나는 치즈를 쳐다봤다. 치즈도 나를 쳐다보는 것 같았다. 물론 치즈에는 눈이 없다. 하지만 그런 기분이 들었다.

I looked at the cheese. The cheese looked at me. All right, cheese has no eyes. But that’s how it felt.

그때 가방 안에서 전화벨이 울렸다.

Then something inside the suitcase started ringing.
