Adım Paula ve bir keresinde bir peynir çaldım. Yani, tam olarak değil. Bir bavul aldım. Yanlış bavulu.

My name is Paula, and I once stole a cheese. Well, not exactly. I took a suitcase. The wrong suitcase.

Bu mart ayında, Frankfurt tren istasyonunda oldu. Trenim neredeyse bir saat geç geldi. Yorgundum ve açtım.

It happened in March, at the station in Frankfurt. My train was almost an hour late. I was tired and hungry.

The next morning I had an important meeting. A job interview at Brandt Feinkost. It’s an old company for cheese, sausage and wine. I really wanted to work there. I had been writing applications for two years. This was my chance.

Trende bavulum üstümde duruyordu. Gri bir bavul, küçük, tekerlekli. Öyle sanıyordum. Frankfurt’ta onu hızlıca aldım ve trenden dışarı koştum.

On the train my suitcase lay on the rack above me. A grey suitcase, small, with wheels. Or so I thought. In Frankfurt I grabbed it quickly and ran off the train.

Otelde bavulu yatağın üstüne koydum ve açtım. Sonra uzun süre hiçbir şey söylemedim.

At the hotel I put the suitcase on the bed and opened it. And then, for a long time, I said nothing.

Orada kıyafet yoktu. Takım elbise yok, bluz yok, diş fırçası yok. Bavulun içinde bir peynir vardı. Büyük, yuvarlak, sarı bir peynir, araba lastiği kadar büyük. Yani, neredeyse.

There were no clothes. No suit, no blouse, no toothbrush. Inside the suitcase lay a cheese. A big, round, yellow cheese, as big as a car tyre. Well, almost.

Peynirin yanında bir zarf vardı. Onu açtım. İçinde para vardı. Çok para. Saydım: üç bin avro.

Next to the cheese lay an envelope. I opened it. There was money inside. A lot of money. I counted it: three thousand euros.

Ve bir not. Biri elle yazdı:

And a note. Someone had written by hand:

Cumartesi, saat 18. O hiçbir şey bilmemeli. Kimse peyniri görmemeli!

Saturday, 6 p.m. He must not know anything. Nobody may see the cheese!

Peynire baktım. Peynir bana baktı. Tamam, peynirin gözü yok. Ama öyle hissettirdi.

I looked at the cheese. The cheese looked at me. All right, cheese has no eyes. But that’s how it felt.

Sonra bavulun içinde bir telefon çaldı.

Then something inside the suitcase started ringing.
