灰色行李箱

我叫宝拉，我曾经偷过一块奶酪。好吧，也不完全是。我拿了一个行李箱。拿错了行李箱。

My name is Paula, and I once stole a cheese. Well, not exactly. I took a suitcase. The wrong suitcase.

那是三月发生的事，在法兰克福火车站。我的火车晚点了快一个小时。我又累又饿。

It happened in March, at the station in Frankfurt. My train was almost an hour late. I was tired and hungry.

第二天早上我有一个重要的面试。是布兰特美食公司的面试。那是一家卖奶酪、香肠和红酒的老公司。我非常想在那里工作。我写了两年求职信。这是我的机会。

The next morning I had an important meeting. A job interview at Brandt Feinkost. It’s an old company for cheese, sausage and wine. I really wanted to work there. I had been writing applications for two years. This was my chance.

在火车上，我的行李箱放在我头顶的行李架上。一个灰色的行李箱，很小，有轮子。我是这么想的。在法兰克福我很快拿了它，跑下了火车。

On the train my suitcase lay on the rack above me. A grey suitcase, small, with wheels. Or so I thought. In Frankfurt I grabbed it quickly and ran off the train.

在酒店里，我把行李箱放在床上打开了。然后我很久没说话。

At the hotel I put the suitcase on the bed and opened it. And then, for a long time, I said nothing.

里面没有衣服。没有西装，没有衬衫，没有牙刷。行李箱里放着一块奶酪。一块又大又圆的黄奶酪，像汽车轮胎那么大。嗯，差不多吧。

There were no clothes. No suit, no blouse, no toothbrush. Inside the suitcase lay a cheese. A big, round, yellow cheese, as big as a car tyre. Well, almost.

奶酪旁边放着一个信封。我打开了它。里面有钱。很多钱。我数了数：三千欧元。

Next to the cheese lay an envelope. I opened it. There was money inside. A lot of money. I counted it: three thousand euros.

还有一张纸条。有人用手写着：

And a note. Someone had written by hand:

周六，18点。他什么都不能知道。谁也不能看到这块奶酪！

Saturday, 6 p.m. He must not know anything. Nobody may see the cheese!

我看着奶酪。奶酪看着我。好吧，奶酪没有眼睛。但感觉就是这样。

I looked at the cheese. The cheese looked at me. All right, cheese has no eyes. But that’s how it felt.

Then something inside the suitcase started ringing.
