Aç Bir Kral
A Hungry King
Çok zaman önce, Hindistan’daki bir ormanda büyük bir aslan yaşadı. O bütün hayvanların kralıydı. Güçlü ve gururluydu ve her zaman açtı.
Long ago, a big lion lived in a forest in India. He was the king of all the animals. He was strong and proud, and he was always hungry.
Her gün ava gitti. Geyikler, yaban domuzları, mandalar ve tavşanlar yakaladı. Yiyebileceğinden daha çok hayvan yakaladı.
Every day he went hunting. He caught deer, wild pigs, buffaloes and rabbits. He caught more animals than he could eat.
Kısa süre sonra hayvanlar evlerinden çıkmaktan korktu. Anneler çocuklarını içeride tuttu. Artık ormanda hiç kimse oynamadı veya şarkı söylemedi.
Soon the animals were afraid to leave their homes. Mothers kept their children inside. Nobody played or sang in the forest any more.
Bir gün bütün hayvanlar büyük bir ağacın altında toplandı. Bir geyik, “Ne yapabiliriz?” diye sordu. “Bu durum böyle sürerse ormanda hiç kimse kalmayacak.”
One day all the animals met under a big tree. “What can we do?” asked a deer. “If this continues, there will be nobody left in the forest.”
Yaşlı bir mandanın bir fikri vardı. “Aslanla konuşalım,” dedi. “Belki onunla bir anlaşma yapabiliriz.”
An old buffalo had an idea. “Let’s talk to the lion,” he said. “Maybe we can make a deal with him.”
Böylece hayvanlar birlikte aslanın mağarasına gitti. Başlarını öne eğdiler. Korkudan titriyorlardı.
So the animals went together to the lion’s cave. They bowed their heads low. They were shaking with fear.
Yaşlı manda, “Büyük Kral,” dedi, “lütfen bizi dinleyin. Çok fazla hayvan avlıyorsunuz. Yakında orman boş kalacak, sonra da hiç yiyeceğiniz olmayacak.”
“Great King,” said the old buffalo, “please listen to us. You hunt too many animals. Soon the forest will be empty, and then you will have no food at all.”
Aslan, “Peki ne istiyorsunuz?” diye sordu.
“So what do you want?” asked the lion.
Manda, “Lütfen mağaranızda kalın,” dedi. “Akşam yemeğiniz için size her gün bir hayvan göndereceğiz. Avlanmak zorunda kalmayacaksınız. Biz de huzur içinde yaşayabileceğiz.”
“Please stay in your cave,” said the buffalo. “Every day we will send you one animal for your dinner. You won’t have to hunt. And the rest of us can live in peace.”
Aslan bunu düşündü. “Pekala,” dedi. “Ama dikkatle dinleyin. Bir gün bir hayvan gelmezse ertesi sabah hepinizi avlarım.”
The lion thought about it. “All right,” he said. “But listen carefully. If an animal doesn’t come one day, I will hunt all of you the next morning.”
Hayvanlar kabul etti. O günden sonra, her gün öğle vakti bir hayvan aslanın mağarasına yürüdü. Ve her hayvan kendi sırasından korktu.
The animals agreed. From that day, one animal walked to the lion’s cave every day at noon. And every animal was afraid of its turn.
