ジャムンの木

The Rose-Apple Tree

インドのひろい川の岸に、大きなジャムンの木がありました。一年中、あまい実がなりました。その枝にサルが住んでいました。

A big rose-apple tree stood on the bank of a wide river in India. It had sweet fruit all year. A monkey lived in its branches.

サルは小さくて、すばやかったです。毎日ジャムンの実を食べて、川を見ていました。サルはしあわせでしたが、時々すこし寂しかったです。

The monkey was small and quick. Every day he ate rose-apples and watched the river. He was happy, but sometimes he felt a little lonely.

あるあつい日の午後、大きなワニが川から上がってきました。ワニは木の下のやわらかい砂の上に横になりました。つかれて、おなかがすいているようでした。

One hot afternoon, a big crocodile came out of the river. He lay down in the soft sand under the tree. He looked tired and hungry.

サルはワニを見おろしました。「こんにちは！」とサルは言いました。「ぼくの木のお客さんだね。実をすこし食べる？」

The monkey looked down at him. “Hello!” he said. “You are a guest at my tree. Would you like some fruit?”

「実？」とワニは聞きました。「ふだんはくだものを食べないんだ。でも、今日はおなかがとてもすいているよ。」

“Fruit?” asked the crocodile. “I don’t usually eat fruit. But I’m very hungry today.”

サルはジャムンの実を何こか投げました。ワニは一つ食べて、もう一つ食べて、さらに五つ食べました。

The monkey threw down a few rose-apples. The crocodile ate one, then another, then five more.

「これはすばらしい！」とワニは言いました。「ハチミツのようにあまいね。ありがとう、友だちよ。」

“These are wonderful!” he said. “They are as sweet as honey. Thank you, my friend.”

それから、ワニは毎日来ました。サルは実を投げて、二ひきは何時間も話しました。川や森や雨や星について話しました。

After that, the crocodile came back every day. The monkey threw him fruit, and they talked for hours. They talked about the river, the forest, the rain and the stars.

やがて、二ひきはいちばんの親友になりました。「きみはぼくの兄弟のようだ」と、ある日ワニが言いました。

Soon they were best friends. “You are like a brother to me,” said the crocodile one day.

毎晩、ワニは妻のためにジャムンの実を持って帰りました。妻はその実が大好きでした。

Every evening, the crocodile took some rose-apples home for his wife. She loved them very much.

でも、妻はすぐに実よりも別のものがほしくなりました。

But soon she wanted something more than fruit.
