Drzewo dżamun
The Rose-Apple Tree
Wielkie drzewo dżamun stało na brzegu szerokiej rzeki w Indiach. Przez cały rok miało słodkie owoce. W jego gałęziach mieszkała małpa.
A big rose-apple tree stood on the bank of a wide river in India. It had sweet fruit all year. A monkey lived in its branches.
Małpa była mała i szybka. Każdego dnia jadła owoce dżamun i patrzyła na rzekę. Była szczęśliwa, ale czasami czuła się trochę samotna.
The monkey was small and quick. Every day he ate rose-apples and watched the river. He was happy, but sometimes he felt a little lonely.
Pewnego gorącego popołudnia z rzeki wyszedł duży krokodyl. Położył się w miękkim piasku pod drzewem. Wyglądał na zmęczonego i głodnego.
One hot afternoon, a big crocodile came out of the river. He lay down in the soft sand under the tree. He looked tired and hungry.
Małpa spojrzała na niego z góry. „Cześć!” – powiedział. „Jesteś gościem przy moim drzewie. Czy chciałbyś trochę owoców?”
The monkey looked down at him. “Hello!” he said. “You are a guest at my tree. Would you like some fruit?”
„Owoców?” – zapytał krokodyl. „Zwykle nie jem owoców. Ale dzisiaj jestem bardzo głodny”.
“Fruit?” asked the crocodile. “I don’t usually eat fruit. But I’m very hungry today.”
Małpa rzuciła na dół kilka owoców dżamun. Krokodyl zjadł jeden, potem drugi, a potem jeszcze pięć.
The monkey threw down a few rose-apples. The crocodile ate one, then another, then five more.
„Są wspaniałe!” – powiedział. „Są słodkie jak miód. Dziękuję ci, mój przyjacielu”.
“These are wonderful!” he said. “They are as sweet as honey. Thank you, my friend.”
Od tamtej pory krokodyl wracał codziennie. Małpa rzucała mu owoce i rozmawiali godzinami. Rozmawiali o rzece, lesie, deszczu i gwiazdach.
After that, the crocodile came back every day. The monkey threw him fruit, and they talked for hours. They talked about the river, the forest, the rain and the stars.
Wkrótce zostali najlepszymi przyjaciółmi. „Jesteś dla mnie jak brat” – powiedział pewnego dnia krokodyl.
Soon they were best friends. “You are like a brother to me,” said the crocodile one day.
Każdego wieczoru krokodyl zabierał trochę owoców dżamun do domu dla swojej żony. Bardzo je lubiła.
Every evening, the crocodile took some rose-apples home for his wife. She loved them very much.
Ale wkrótce zapragnęła czegoś więcej niż owoce.
But soon she wanted something more than fruit.
