Jemand klopft an die Tür. Es ist drei Uhr nachts.

Somebody was knocking on the door. It was three o’clock in the morning.

Sam opened his eyes and listened. Knock, knock, knock. Then a man’s voice: “I know you’re awake! I can hear you!”

Sam wasn’t awake. Well, now he was. He went to the door in his T-shirt and opened it.

It was Norbert from 2A, in blue pyjamas, with a very red face.

„Jede Nacht“, sagt Norbert.

“Every night,” said Norbert. “Every night this week, at exactly three o’clock, there’s a noise in your flat. Bang, bang, bang. For half an hour. My bedroom is two floors under your kitchen, and in this building you hear everything through the pipes. And I have to get up at six.”

„Das tut mir echt leid“, sagt Sam. „Aber ich hab geschlafen. Ich glaub, hier haben alle geschlafen.“

“I’m really sorry,” said Sam. “But I was asleep. I think everybody here was asleep.”

„Und wer macht dann den Lärm? Ein Gespenst?“

“Then who is making the noise? A ghost?”

Bumm. Bumm. Bumm.

At that moment, from the kitchen, they both heard it. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Norbert sieht Sam an. Sam sieht zur Küchentür. Keiner bewegt sich.

Norbert looked at Sam. Sam looked at the kitchen door. Nobody moved.

„Geh du zuerst“, sagt Norbert. „Ist ja deine Wohnung.“

“You go first,” said Norbert. “It’s your flat.”

Sam macht die Küchentür ganz langsam auf. Die Küche ist dunkel und leer. Und der Lärm hört auf.

Sam opened the kitchen door very slowly. The kitchen was dark and empty. And the noise stopped.

Wer eben zuerst kommt.“

“Well,” said Norbert. “I’m going back to bed. But if your ghost wakes me up again, I’m calling the police. Or a priest. Whoever comes first.”
