Il rumore di notte

Qualcuno ha bussato alla porta. Erano le tre di notte.

Somebody was knocking on the door. It was three o’clock in the morning.

Sam ha aperto gli occhi e ha ascoltato. Toc, toc, toc. Poi la voce di un uomo: «So che sei sveglio! Ti sento!»

Sam opened his eyes and listened. Knock, knock, knock. Then a man’s voice: “I know you’re awake! I can hear you!”

Sam non era sveglio. Beh, adesso sì. È andato alla porta in maglietta e l’ha aperta.

Sam wasn’t awake. Well, now he was. He went to the door in his T-shirt and opened it.

Era Norbert del 2A, in pigiama blu, con la faccia molto rossa.

It was Norbert from 2A, in blue pyjamas, with a very red face.

«Tutte le notti», ha detto Norbert. «Tutte le notti questa settimana, esattamente alle tre, c’è un rumore nel tuo appartamento. Bum, bum, bum. Per mezz’ora. La mia camera è due piani sotto la tua cucina, e in questo palazzo si sente tutto attraverso i tubi. E io mi devo alzare alle sei.»

“Every night,” said Norbert. “Every night this week, at exactly three o’clock, there’s a noise in your flat. Bang, bang, bang. For half an hour. My bedroom is two floors under your kitchen, and in this building you hear everything through the pipes. And I have to get up at six.”

«Mi dispiace davvero», ha detto Sam. «Ma dormivo. Penso che tutti qui dormissero.»

“I’m really sorry,” said Sam. “But I was asleep. I think everybody here was asleep.”

«Allora chi fa questo rumore? Un fantasma?»

“Then who is making the noise? A ghost?”

In quel momento, dalla cucina, entrambi lo hanno sentito. Bum. Bum. Bum.

At that moment, from the kitchen, they both heard it. Bang. Bang. Bang.

Norbert ha guardato Sam. Sam ha guardato la porta della cucina. Nessuno si è mosso.

Norbert looked at Sam. Sam looked at the kitchen door. Nobody moved.

«Vai prima tu», ha detto Norbert. «È il tuo appartamento.»

“You go first,” said Norbert. “It’s your flat.”

Sam ha aperto la porta della cucina molto lentamente. La cucina era buia e vuota. E il rumore si è fermato.

Sam opened the kitchen door very slowly. The kitchen was dark and empty. And the noise stopped.

«Beh», ha detto Norbert. «Torno a letto. Ma se il tuo fantasma mi sveglia di nuovo, chiamo la polizia. O un prete. Chi arriva prima.»

“Well,” said Norbert. “I’m going back to bed. But if your ghost wakes me up again, I’m calling the police. Or a priest. Whoever comes first.”
