Biri kapıyı çalıyordu. Sabahın saat üçüydü.
Somebody was knocking on the door. It was three o’clock in the morning.
Sam gözlerini açtı ve dinledi. Tak, tak, tak. Sonra bir erkek sesi duyuldu: “Uyanıksın, biliyorum! Sesini duyabiliyorum!”
Sam opened his eyes and listened. Knock, knock, knock. Then a man’s voice: “I know you’re awake! I can hear you!”
Sam uyanık değildi. Ama artık uyandı. Üstünde tişörtüyle kapıya gitti ve kapıyı açtı.
Sam wasn’t awake. Well, now he was. He went to the door in his T-shirt and opened it.
Gelen kişi 2A’dan Norbert’ti; mavi pijamaları vardı ve yüzü kıpkırmızıydı.
It was Norbert from 2A, in blue pyjamas, with a very red face.
“Her gece,” dedi Norbert. “Bu hafta her gece, tam saat üçte, dairenizden bir ses geliyor. Güm, güm, güm. Yarım saat boyunca. Yatak odam mutfağınızın iki kat altında ve bu binada borulardan her şey duyuluyor. Üstelik saat altıda kalkmam gerek.”
“Every night,” said Norbert. “Every night this week, at exactly three o’clock, there’s a noise in your flat. Bang, bang, bang. For half an hour. My bedroom is two floors under your kitchen, and in this building you hear everything through the pipes. And I have to get up at six.”
“Çok özür dilerim,” dedi Sam. “Ama ben uyuyordum. Sanırım buradaki herkes uyuyordu.”
“I’m really sorry,” said Sam. “But I was asleep. I think everybody here was asleep.”
“O zaman bu sesi kim çıkarıyor? Bir hayalet mi?”
“Then who is making the noise? A ghost?”
Tam o anda, mutfaktan ikisi de sesi duydu. Güm. Güm. Güm.
At that moment, from the kitchen, they both heard it. Bang. Bang. Bang.
Norbert Sam’e baktı. Sam mutfak kapısına baktı. Kimse kıpırdamadı.
Norbert looked at Sam. Sam looked at the kitchen door. Nobody moved.
“Önce sen git,” dedi Norbert. “Burası senin dairen.”
“You go first,” said Norbert. “It’s your flat.”
Sam mutfak kapısını çok yavaşça açtı. Mutfak karanlık ve boştu. Ve ses kesildi.
Sam opened the kitchen door very slowly. The kitchen was dark and empty. And the noise stopped.
“Pekâlâ,” dedi Norbert. “Ben yatağıma dönüyorum. Ama hayaletin beni yine uyandırırsa polisi ararım. Ya da bir rahibi. Hangisi önce gelirse.”
“Well,” said Norbert. “I’m going back to bed. But if your ghost wakes me up again, I’m calling the police. Or a priest. Whoever comes first.”
