Mi nombre es doctor Watson. Soy médico y amigo de Sherlock Holmes. Holmes es detective en Baker Street, en Londres. La gente le lleva sus problemas extraños y yo a menudo escribo sus casos.

My name is Dr Watson. I am a doctor, and a friend of Sherlock Holmes. Holmes is a detective in Baker Street, in London. People bring him their strange problems, and I often write down his cases.

Un día en el otoño del año pasado, fui a verlo. No estaba solo. Hablaba con un señor gordo y mayor con la cara roja y el pelo de un rojo brillante. Pedí perdón y me di la vuelta para salir. Pero Holmes tiró de mí hacia la habitación y cerró la puerta detrás de mí.

One day in the autumn of last year, I went to see him. He was not alone. He was talking with a fat, older gentleman with a red face and bright red hair. I said sorry and turned to go. But Holmes pulled me into the room and closed the door behind me.

«Llegó en el mejor momento posible, mi querido Watson», dijo con calidez.

“You came at the best possible time, my dear Watson,” he said warmly.

«Tenía miedo de su trabajo».

“I was afraid that you were busy.”

«Estoy ocupado. Muy ocupado».

“I am. Very busy.”

«Entonces puedo esperar en la otra habitación».

“Then I can wait in the next room.”

«De ninguna manera. Señor Wilson, este caballero es mi amigo. Me ayudó en muchos de mis mejores casos y puede ayudarme en el suyo también».

“Not at all. Mr Wilson, this gentleman is my friend. He helped me in many of my best cases, and he can help me in yours too.”

El señor gordo se levantó un poco de su silla e hizo un pequeño gesto con la cabeza. Sus ojos pequeños me miraron rápido, con una pregunta en ellos.

The fat gentleman stood up a little from his chair and gave a small nod. His small eyes looked at me quickly, with a question in them.

«Siéntese en el sofá, Watson», dijo Holmes. Se recostó en su sillón y juntó las yemas de sus dedos. Siempre hacía esto cuando pensaba mucho. «Sé que le encantan las cosas extrañas, mi querido Watson. Le gusta todo lo que está fuera de los días aburridos de la vida normal. Por eso escribe sobre mis pequeñas aventuras. Hace unos días le dije algo. La vida real es más extraña que cualquier historia que un escritor puede inventar. ¿Se acuerda?».

“Sit on the sofa, Watson,” said Holmes. He sat back in his armchair and put the tips of his fingers together. He always did this when he was thinking hard. “I know that you love strange things, my dear Watson. You love everything outside the boring days of normal life. That is why you write about my little adventures. A few days ago I told you something. Real life is stranger than any story that a writer can invent. Do you remember?”

«Sí. Y yo no estaba de acuerdo con usted».

“Yes. And I did not agree with you.”

«No lo estaba, doctor. Pero al final va a estar de acuerdo conmigo. Ahora bien, el señor Jabez Wilson vino a verme esta mañana. Su historia es una de las más extrañas que he escuchado. ¿Es un delito? Todavía no lo sé».

“You did not, Doctor. But you are going to agree with me in the end. Now, Mr Jabez Wilson came to see me this morning. His story is one of the strangest that I have ever heard. Is it a crime? I don’t know yet.”

Se giró hacia nuestro visitante.

He turned to our visitor.

«Señor Wilson, por favor empiece su historia otra vez desde el principio. Mi amigo el doctor Watson no oyó la primera parte».

“Mr Wilson, please start your story again from the beginning. My friend Dr Watson did not hear the first part.”
