Le Géant égoïste

Chaque après-midi, en revenant de l’école, les enfants avaient l’habitude d’aller jouer dans le jardin du Géant.

Every afternoon, as they were coming from school, the children used to go and play in the Giant’s garden.

C’était un grand et beau jardin, avec une herbe verte et douce.

It was a large lovely garden, with soft green grass.

Çà et là, sur l’herbe, se dressaient de belles fleurs semblables à des étoiles, et il y avait douze pêchers qui, au printemps, se couvraient de délicates fleurs roses et perlées, et qui, en automne, portaient des fruits succulents.

Here and there over the grass stood beautiful flowers like stars, and there were twelve peach-trees that in the spring-time broke out into delicate blossoms of pink and pearl, and in the autumn bore rich fruit.

Les oiseaux se posaient sur les arbres et chantaient si doucement que les enfants interrompaient leurs jeux pour les écouter. « Comme nous sommes heureux ici ! » se criaient-ils les uns aux autres.

The birds sat on the trees and sang so sweetly that the children used to stop their games in order to listen to them. “How happy we are here!” they cried to each other.

Un jour, le Géant revint. Il était allé rendre visite à son ami l’ogre de Cornouailles, et était resté avec lui pendant sept ans.

One day the Giant came back. He had been to visit his friend the Cornish ogre, and had stayed with him for seven years.

Au bout de ces sept années, il avait dit tout ce qu’il avait à dire, car sa conversation était limitée, et il décida de retourner dans son propre château. À son arrivée, il vit les enfants qui jouaient dans le jardin.

After the seven years were over he had said all that he had to say, for his conversation was limited, and he determined to return to his own castle. When he arrived he saw the children playing in the garden.

« Que faites-vous ici ? » cria-t-il d’une voix très bourrue, et les enfants s’enfuirent.

“What are you doing here?” he cried in a very gruff voice, and the children ran away.

« Mon jardin est mon jardin », dit le Géant ; « tout le monde peut comprendre cela, et je ne permettrai à personne d’y jouer, sauf à moi-même. » Il construisit donc un haut mur tout autour et installa un panneau.

“My own garden is my own garden,” said the Giant; “any one can understand that, and I will allow nobody to play in it but myself.” So he built a high wall all round it, and put up a notice-board.

C’était un Géant très égoïste.

He was a very selfish Giant.

Les pauvres enfants n’avaient plus nulle part où jouer. Ils essayèrent de jouer sur la route, mais elle était très poussiéreuse et pleine de pierres dures, et cela ne leur plaisait pas.

The poor children had now nowhere to play. They tried to play on the road, but the road was very dusty and full of hard stones, and they did not like it.

Ils avaient l’habitude d’errer autour du haut mur une fois leurs leçons terminées, et de parler du magnifique jardin qui se trouvait derrière. « Comme nous étions heureux là-bas », se disaient-ils.

They used to wander round the high wall when their lessons were over, and talk about the beautiful garden inside. “How happy we were there,” they said to each other.
