シャーロック・ホームズは暖炉の上の棚から小さな瓶を取りました。それから、革のケースから針を一本出しました。長い白い指で針を準備し、左の袖をまくりました。
Sherlock Holmes took a small bottle from the shelf above the fire. Then he took a needle out of its neat leather case. His long, white fingers got the needle ready, and he pushed back his left sleeve.
一瞬、彼は細く力強い腕を見つめました。そこには古い針の跡がたくさんありました。それから、彼は腕に針を刺しました。柔らかい肘掛け椅子に深く座り、長く幸せそうな息を吐きました。
For a moment he looked at his thin, strong arm. There were many small marks of old needles on it. Then he pushed the needle into his arm. He sat back in his soft armchair and let out a long, happy breath.
私は何ヶ月も毎日三回これを見て、毎日もっと嫌いになりました。毎晩、自分自身に腹が立ちました。「なぜ何も言わないのか」と私は思いました。しかしホームズは冷静で、とても賢い人でした。彼と議論するのは簡単ではなく、私は少し彼を恐れていました。
I watched this three times a day for many months, and I hated it more every day. Every night I was angry with myself. “Why don’t I say something?” I thought. But Holmes was cool, calm and very clever. It was not easy to argue with him, and I was a little afraid of him.
その日の午後、私は昼食と一緒に赤ワインを飲みました。ワインのせいかもしれません。しかし突然、私は黙っていられなくなりました。
That afternoon I drank some red wine with my lunch. Maybe it was the wine. But suddenly I could not stay quiet any longer.
「今日は何だい?」と私は聞きました。「モルヒネか、それともコカインか?」
“What is it today?” I asked. “Morphine or cocaine?”
彼は古い本からゆっくりと顔を上げました。コカインは強い薬で、彼はよくそれを使っていました。
He looked up slowly from an old book. Cocaine is a strong drug, and he took it often.
「コカインだよ」と彼は言いました。「水に溶かした七パーセントのコカインだ。試してみるかい?」
“It is cocaine,” he said. “Seven per cent cocaine in water. Do you want to try it?”
「いいえ、結構です」と私はきっぱり答えました。「アフガニスタンでの戦争で体はまだ弱いんです。これ以上負担をかけられません」
“No, thank you,” I answered sharply. “My body is still weak from the war in Afghanistan. I can’t give it any more stress.”
彼は私の強い言葉に微笑みました。「君が正しいのかもしれない、ワトソン」と彼は言いました。「体には悪いのかもしれない。でも、これで頭がとても明晰で速くなるんだ。他のことは私にとって大した問題ではない」
He smiled at my strong words. “Perhaps you are right, Watson,” he said. “Perhaps it is bad for the body. But it makes my mind so clear and so quick. The rest does not matter much to me.”
「でも考えてください!」と私は言いました。「代償を考えるんです!確かに脳を刺激します。でもそれは病気であって、贈り物ではありません。脳を永遠に弱くするかもしれません。それに、その後にどれほど暗く悲しい気持ちになるか知っているでしょう。なぜ短い快楽のために偉大な頭脳を危険にさらすのですか?友人として言っています。でも医者としても言っています。あなたの健康は私の仕事の一部なのです」
“But think about it!” I said. “Think about the cost! Yes, it excites your brain. But it is an illness, not a gift. It can make your brain weak for ever. And you know how dark and sad you feel afterwards. Why do you want to risk your great mind for a short pleasure? I speak to you as a friend. But I also speak as a doctor, and your health is partly my job.”
彼は怒っているようではありませんでした。指先を合わせて、椅子の肘掛けに寄りかかりました。
He did not seem angry. He put the tips of his fingers together and leaned on the arms of his chair.
「私の頭脳は止まっているのが嫌なんだ」と彼は言いました。「問題をくれ。仕事をくれ。一番難しい暗号をくれれば、私は幸せだ。そうすれば薬はいらない。でも、普通の生活の退屈な日々は嫌いだ。私の頭脳は刺激を必要としている。だからこの仕事を選んだんだ。いや、自分で作ったと言うべきか。世界で私一人だけだ」
“My mind hates to stand still,” he said. “Give me problems. Give me work. Give me the most difficult secret code, and I am happy. Then I don’t need drugs. But I hate the boring days of normal life. My mind needs excitement. That is why I chose my job. Or rather, I made it. I am the only one in the world.”
「唯一の私立探偵ですか?」と私は尋ねました。私は眉を上げました。
“The only private detective?” I asked. I lifted my eyebrows.
