Numele meu este John Watson și sunt doctor. Timp de opt ani l-am privit pe prietenul meu Sherlock Holmes la lucru. Holmes era detectiv și am însemnări despre mai mult de șaptezeci dintre cazurile lui.

My name is John Watson, and I am a doctor. For eight years I watched my friend Sherlock Holmes at work. Holmes was a detective, and I have notes on more than seventy of his cases.

Holmes a iubit munca lui mai mult decât banii, așa că a luat numai cazuri neobișnuite. Dar niciun caz din însemnările mele nu este mai ciudat decât cazul familiei Roylott din Stoke Moran, o familie veche din Surrey.

Holmes loved his work more than money, so he took only unusual cases. But no case in my notes is stranger than the case of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran, an old family in Surrey.

It happened in the early days, when Holmes and I lived together at 221B Baker Street in London. Until now I could not tell the story, because of a promise. But the promise is not important any more, so here it is.

Era la începutul lunii aprilie, în anul 1883. Într-o dimineață m-am trezit, iar Sherlock Holmes stătea lângă patul meu. Era deja îmbrăcat. De obicei, Holmes se trezea târziu. M-am uitat la ceasul de deasupra șemineului. Era doar șapte și un sfert, iar eu am fost surprins și puțin supărat.

It was early in April, in the year 1883. One morning I woke up, and Sherlock Holmes was standing by my bed. He was already dressed. Usually Holmes got up late. I looked at the clock above the fire. It was only a quarter past seven, and I was surprised and a little annoyed.

„Îmi pare foarte rău că te trezesc, Watson”, a spus el. „O vizitatoare a trezit-o pe doamna Hudson, iar ea m-a trezit pe mine. Acum te trezesc eu pe tine.”

“I’m very sorry to wake you, Watson,” he said. “A visitor woke Mrs Hudson, and she woke me. Now I am waking you.”

„Ce este?” am întrebat eu. „Un incendiu?”

“What is it?” I asked. “A fire?”

„Nu, o clientă. O tânără doamnă este aici și este foarte agitată. Vrea să mă vadă acum. Așteaptă în camera de zi. Și sunt sigur că vei dori să urmărești cazul de la început.”

“No, a client. A young lady is here, and she is very excited. She wants to see me now. She is waiting in the sitting room. And you will want to follow the case from the start, I’m sure.”

„Dragul meu Holmes, nu vreau să pierd asta pentru nimic în lume.”

“My dear Holmes, I don’t want to miss it for anything.”

Mi-am pus hainele în câteva minute și am coborât cu el în camera de zi.

I put on my clothes in a few minutes and went down with him to the sitting room.

O doamnă stătea lângă fereastră. Era îmbrăcată în negru și purta un voal, o pânză neagră și subțire peste față. S-a ridicat în picioare când am intrat.

A lady was sitting by the window. She was dressed in black, and she wore a veil, a thin black cloth over her face. She stood up when we came in.

„Bună dimineața, doamnă”, a spus Holmes vesel. „Numele meu este Sherlock Holmes. Acesta este bunul meu prieten, doctorul Watson. Vă rog să luați loc lângă foc. Voi comanda o ceașcă de cafea caldă pentru dumneavoastră, pentru că văd că tremurați.”

“Good morning, madam,” Holmes said cheerfully. “My name is Sherlock Holmes. This is my good friend Dr Watson. Please sit near the fire. I’ll order you a cup of hot coffee, because I can see that you are shaking.”

“It isn’t the cold,” the woman said quietly.

„Ce este, atunci?”

“What is it, then?”
