Vị khách mặc đồ đen
A Visitor in Black
My name is John Watson, and I am a doctor. For eight years I watched my friend Sherlock Holmes at work. Holmes was a detective, and I have notes on more than seventy of his cases.
Holmes loved his work more than money, so he took only unusual cases. But no case in my notes is stranger than the case of the Roylotts of Stoke Moran, an old family in Surrey.
It happened in the early days, when Holmes and I lived together at 221B Baker Street in London. Until now I could not tell the story, because of a promise. But the promise is not important any more, so here it is.
Đó là vào đầu tháng Tư, năm 1883. Một buổi sáng nọ tôi thức dậy, và Sherlock Holmes đang đứng bên giường tôi. Anh ấy đã mặc quần áo xong xuôi. Thường thì Holmes dậy muộn. Tôi nhìn chiếc đồng hồ phía trên lò sưởi. Mới có bảy giờ mười lăm, và tôi vừa ngạc nhiên vừa hơi bực mình.
It was early in April, in the year 1883. One morning I woke up, and Sherlock Holmes was standing by my bed. He was already dressed. Usually Holmes got up late. I looked at the clock above the fire. It was only a quarter past seven, and I was surprised and a little annoyed.
“I’m very sorry to wake you, Watson,” he said. “A visitor woke Mrs Hudson, and she woke me. Now I am waking you.”
“Có chuyện gì thế?” tôi hỏi. “Cháy nhà à?”
“What is it?” I asked. “A fire?”
“Không, một khách hàng. Một cô gái trẻ đang ở đây, và cô ấy rất kích động. Cô ấy muốn gặp tôi ngay bây giờ. Cô ấy đang đợi trong phòng khách. Và tôi chắc là cậu sẽ muốn theo dõi vụ án ngay từ đầu.”
“No, a client. A young lady is here, and she is very excited. She wants to see me now. She is waiting in the sitting room. And you will want to follow the case from the start, I’m sure.”
“Holmes thân mến, tôi chẳng muốn bỏ lỡ nó vì bất cứ điều gì đâu.”
“My dear Holmes, I don’t want to miss it for anything.”
Tôi mặc quần áo trong vài phút rồi cùng anh đi xuống phòng khách.
I put on my clothes in a few minutes and went down with him to the sitting room.
A lady was sitting by the window. She was dressed in black, and she wore a veil. She stood up when we came in.
“Good morning, madam,” Holmes said cheerfully. “My name is Sherlock Holmes. This is my good friend Dr Watson. Please sit near the fire. I’ll order you a cup of hot coffee, because I can see that you are shaking.”
“It isn’t the cold,” the woman said quietly.
“Vậy thì vì điều gì?”
“What is it, then?”
