이오 이야기

아르고스라는 마을에 이오라는 처녀가 살았다. 이오는 매우 아름답고 착해서 이오를 아는 모든 이가 사랑했고, 온 세상에 이오만 한 사람이 없다고 말했다.

In the town of Argos there lived a maiden named Io. She was so fair and good that all who knew her loved her, and said that there was no one like her in the whole world.

구름 속 보금자리에 살던 유피테르는 이오에 관한 이야기를 듣고 이오를 보러 아르고스로 내려왔다.

When Jupiter, in his home in the clouds, heard of her, he came down to Argos to see her.

이오는 유피테르의 마음에 쏙 들었고 몹시 다정하고 지혜로웠다. 그래서 유피테르는 다음 날도 찾아왔고, 그다음 날도, 또 그다음 날도 찾아왔다. 그러다 얼마 지나지 않아 이오 곁에 있으려고 아르고스에 내내 머물렀다.

She pleased him so much, and was so kind and wise, that he came back the next day and the next and the next; and by and by he stayed in Argos all the time so that he might be near her.

이오는 유피테르가 누구인지 몰랐지만, 먼 나라에서 온 왕자라고 여겼다. 유피테르가 젊은이의 모습으로 나타났고, 본모습인 땅과 하늘의 위대한 왕처럼 보이지 않았기 때문이었다.

She did not know who he was, but thought that he was a prince from some far-off land; for he came in the guise of a young man, and did not look like the great king of earth and sky that he was.

그러나 구름 한가운데에서 유피테르와 함께 살며 왕좌를 나누어 쓰던 왕비 유노는 이오를 전혀 좋아하지 않았다.

But Juno, the queen who lived with Jupiter and shared his throne in the midst of the clouds, did not love Io at all.

유노는 유피테르가 왜 그렇게 오랫동안 집을 비웠는지 듣고서, 그 어여쁜 처녀에게 온갖 해를 입히겠다고 마음먹었다. 그리하여 어느 날 무슨 일을 벌일 수 있을지 살펴보려고 아르고스로 내려갔다.

When she heard why Jupiter stayed from home so long, she made up her mind to do the fair girl all the harm that she could; and one day she went down to Argos to try what could be done.

유피테르는 유노가 아직 멀리 있을 때 유노를 보았고, 왜 왔는지도 알아차렸다. 그래서 유노에게서 이오를 지키려고 그 처녀를 흰 암소로 변하게 했다. 유노가 집으로 돌아가면 이오에게 본래 모습을 되돌려주기 어렵지 않으리라고 생각한 것이었다.

Jupiter saw her while she was yet a great way off, and he knew why she had come. So, to save Io from her, he changed the maiden to a white cow. He thought that when Juno had gone back home, it would not be hard to give Io her own form again.

하지만 왕비는 암소를 보자마자 그것이 이오임을 알아챘다.

But when the queen saw the cow, she knew that it was Io.

“어머, 참 훌륭한 암소를 두셨네요!” 유노가 말했다. “착한 유피테르님, 저에게 그 암소를 주세요. 어서 주세요!”

“Oh, what a fine cow you have there!” she said. “Give her to me, good Jupiter, give her to me!”

유피테르는 그렇게 하고 싶지 않았다. 그러나 유노가 하도 간청하여 마침내 포기하고 암소를 유노 차지로 넘겨주었다. 유피테르는 머지않아 왕비에게서 암소를 빼내어 다시 소녀로 변하게 할 수 있으리라고 생각했다.

Jupiter did not like to do this; but she coaxed so hard that at last he gave up, and let her have the cow for her own. He thought that it would not be long till he could get her away from the queen, and change her to a girl once more.

그러나 유노는 너무 영리해서 유피테르를 믿지 않았다. 유노는 암소의 뿔을 쥐고 마을 밖으로 끌고 갔다.

But Juno was too wise to trust him. She took the cow by her horns, and led her out of the town.

“자, 사랑스러운 처녀야,” 유노가 말했다. “살아 있는 한 이 모습으로 지내게 해 줄게.”

“Now, my sweet maid,” she said, “I will see that you stay in this shape as long as you live.”

그러고 나서 유노는 우리처럼 눈이 두 개만 있는 게 아니라 열의 열 배나 되는 눈을 가진 아르고스라는 기이한 파수꾼에게 암소를 맡겼다.

Then she gave the cow in charge of a strange watchman named Argus, who had, not two eyes only, as you and I have, but ten times ten.

아르고스는 암소를 숲으로 끌고 가 긴 밧줄로 나무에 묶어 두었다. 암소는 그곳에 서서 풀을 뜯으며 “음매! 음매!” 하고 울어야만 했다.

And Argus led the cow to a grove, and tied her by a long rope to a tree, where she had to stand and eat grass, and cry, “Moo! moo!”
