“Sexta-feira é o aniversário da Maya”, disse Leo. “Eu vi no passaporte dela. E nós vamos fazer uma festa surpresa para ela.”

“Friday is Maya’s birthday,” said Leo. “I’ve seen it on her passport. And we’re going to give her a surprise party.”

Sam’s voice was back, but only half of it. “Why were you looking at her passport?”

“Estava na mesa. Estava aberto. Bem, estava fechado, e depois ficou aberto. Isso não é importante. Escuta. A Maya trabalha toda noite, ela está sempre cansada, ela nunca se diverte. Ela precisa de uma festa. Com bolo e música e muitas pessoas que pulam e gritam ‘Surpresa!’”

“It was on the table. It was open. Well, it was closed, and then it was open. That’s not important. Listen. Maya works every night, she’s always tired, she never has fun. She needs a party. With a cake and music and lots of people who jump out and shout ‘Surprise!’”

“A Maya odeia pessoas que pulam.”

“Maya hates people who jump out.”

“Ela odeia quando é uma surpresa ruim. Esta é uma surpresa boa.”

“She hates it when it’s a bad surprise. This is a good surprise.”

Leo had a plan, of course. Maya was working on Friday night, so she would come home on Saturday morning at half past seven. The party would start at seven. “A breakfast party,” said Leo. “Nobody has ever done that. We’ll be famous.”

“Você sempre diz que nós vamos ficar famosos.”

“You always say we’ll be famous.”

“E um dia eu vou ter razão.”

“And one day I’ll be right.”

O próprio Leo escreveu o convite e colocou no hall de entrada: FESTA SURPRESA PARA A MAYA! SÁBADO, ÀS 7H DA MANHÃ. QUARTO ANDAR, APARTAMENTO B. TRAGA ALGO PARA O CAFÉ DA MANHÃ. SHHH!

Leo wrote the invitation himself and put it up in the entrance hall: SURPRISE PARTY FOR MAYA! SATURDAY 7 A.M. FOURTH FLOOR, FLAT B. BRING SOMETHING FOR BREAKFAST. SHHH!

Then Sam had an idea, and before he could think about it too much, he held a sign up at the window: PARTY. SATURDAY. 7 A.M. COME?

Do outro lado do pátio, Nora escreveu: 7H DA MANHÃ??? Depois, um momento mais tarde: TÁ BOM. EU VOU TRAZER UMA COISA. EU TAMBÉM TENHO UMA COISA PARA MOSTRAR PARA VOCÊ.

Across the courtyard, Nora wrote: 7 A.M.??? Then, after a moment: OK. I’LL BRING SOMETHING. I ALSO HAVE SOMETHING TO SHOW YOU.
