말이 너무 많은 왕

The King Who Talked Too Much

옛날 옛적에, 브라흐마다타 왕이 인도의 바라나시 도시를 다스렸다. 그는 좋은 왕이었지만, 큰 문제 하나가 있었다. 말이 너무 많았다.

Long ago, King Brahmadatta ruled the city of Benares in India. He was a good king, but he had one big problem. He talked too much.

왕은 아침에도 말했고, 밤에도 말했다. 저녁을 먹으면서도 말했고, 정원에서도 말했다. 다른 사람들이 말하고 싶어 할 때도 멈추지 않았다. 아무도 한마디도 할 수 없었다.

He talked in the morning, and he talked at night. He talked at dinner and in the garden. When other people wanted to speak, he did not stop. Nobody could say a word.

왕에게는 지혜로운 신하가 있었다. 신하는 왕을 좋아했고 돕고 싶었다. 하지만 왕에게 “말이 너무 많으십니다”라고 어떻게 말할 수 있었을까?

The king had a wise adviser. The adviser liked the king and wanted to help him. But how could he tell a king, “You talk too much”?

“기다려야 해”라고 신하는 생각했다. “언젠가 알맞은 때를 찾을 거야.”

“I must wait,” the adviser thought. “One day I will find the right moment.”

저 멀리 북쪽 산속에 작은 호수가 있었다. 그곳에 거북이가 살았다. 거북이는 친절했지만, 왕과 아주 비슷했다. 말하는 것을 정말 좋아했다.

Far away, in the mountains in the north, there was a little lake. A tortoise lived there. He was a kind tortoise, but he was very like the king. He loved talking.

거북이는 물고기들에게도 말했고, 개구리들에게도 말했다. 나무들에게도 말했고, 바위들에게도 말했다. 심지어 아무도 듣지 않을 때도 말했다.

He talked to the fish and to the frogs. He talked to the trees and to the rocks. He even talked when nobody was listening.

봄마다 두 기러기가 호수로 날아왔다. 기러기들은 자매였고, 거북이의 좋은 친구였다. 거북이는 말했고, 기러기들은 들었다. 기러기들은 참을성이 아주 많았다.

Every spring, two wild geese flew to the lake. They were sisters, and they were good friends of the tortoise. The tortoise talked, and the geese listened. They were very patient.

하지만 어느 여름, 작은 호수에 나쁜 일이 생겼다.

But one summer, something bad happened to the little lake.
