मैं उसे समय-यात्री कहने जा रहा हूँ। यह उसके लिए सबसे आसान नाम है। वह एक वैज्ञानिक था, और वह लंदन के पास रिचमंड में एक बड़े घर में रहता था। हर गुरुवार को हममें से कुछ लोग उसके घर रात का खाना खाते थे।
I am going to call him the Time Traveller. That is the easiest name for him. He was a scientist, and he lived in a big house in Richmond, near London. Every Thursday a few of us had dinner at his house.
उस गुरुवार को हम खाने के बाद आग के पास बैठे थे। समय-यात्री ने अपनी कुर्सियाँ खुद बनाई थीं, और वे बहुत आरामदायक थीं। यह अच्छे खाने के बाद का सुस्त समय था, जब नए विचार आसानी से आते हैं।
That Thursday we were sitting by the fire after dinner. The Time Traveller made his chairs himself, and they were very comfortable. It was the lazy hour after a good meal, when ideas come easily.
समय-यात्री हमें कोई कठिन बात समझा रहा था। उसकी भूरी आँखें चमक रही थीं, और उसका पीला चेहरा उत्साह से लाल था। हम आराम से पीछे बैठकर सुन रहे थे। उस समय हमने सोचा कि उसका नया विचार शब्दों का एक चतुर खेल मात्र था।
The Time Traveller was explaining something difficult to us. His grey eyes were shining, and his pale face was red with excitement. We sat back and listened. At that time we thought his new idea was only a clever game with words.
“मेरी बात ध्यान से सुनिए,” उसने कहा। “मैं आपको दिखाना चाहता हूँ कि एक-दो पुराने विचार ग़लत हैं। उदाहरण के लिए, जो गणित आपको स्कूल में पढ़ाया गया था, वह ग़लत है।”
“Listen to me carefully,” he said. “I want to show you that one or two old ideas are wrong. For example, the maths they taught you at school is wrong.”
“शुरुआत करने के लिए यह बहुत बड़ी बात है,” फिल्बी ने कहा। फिल्बी के बाल लाल थे, और उसे बहस करना पसंद था।
“That is a big thing to start with,” said Filby. Filby had red hair, and he liked to argue.
“मैं आपसे किसी ठोस वजह के बिना किसी बात पर विश्वास करने के लिए नहीं कह रहा हूँ,” समय-यात्री ने जवाब दिया। “एक रेखा के बारे में सोचिए। एक असली रेखा की कोई मोटाई नहीं होती, इसलिए वह वास्तव में मौजूद नहीं हो सकती। आपने स्कूल में यही सीखा था, है ना?”
“I am not asking you to believe anything without a good reason,” the Time Traveller answered. “Think about a line. A true line has no thickness at all, so it cannot really exist. You learned that at school, didn’t you?”
मेहमानों में से एक मनोवैज्ञानिक था। एक मनोवैज्ञानिक इस बात का अध्ययन करता है कि लोग कैसे सोचते हैं। “हाँ, यह सही है,” मनोवैज्ञानिक ने कहा।
One of the guests was a psychologist. A psychologist studies how people think. “Yes, that is right,” said the Psychologist.
“अब एक डिब्बे के बारे में सोचिए,” समय-यात्री आगे बोला। “इसकी लंबाई, चौड़ाई और ऊँचाई होती है। लेकिन क्या केवल उन तीन चीज़ों वाला डिब्बा वास्तव में मौजूद हो सकता है?”
“Now think about a box,” the Time Traveller went on. “It has length, width and height. But can a box with only those three things really exist?”
“बिल्कुल हो सकता है,” फिल्बी ने कहा। “सभी असली चीज़ें…”
“Of course it can,” said Filby. “All real things …”
“एक पल रुकिए,” समय-यात्री ने कहा। “क्या कोई डिब्बा बिना किसी समय के मौजूद रह सकता है? क्या वह एक सेकंड के लिए भी वहाँ नहीं रह सकता?”
“Wait a moment,” said the Time Traveller. “Can a box exist for no time at all? Can it be there for not even one second?”
“मैं आपकी बात नहीं समझा,” फिल्बी ने कहा।
“I don’t understand you,” said Filby.
फिल्बी सोचने लगा, और समय-यात्री अपनी बात समझाता रहा।
Filby started to think, and the Time Traveller went on with his explanation.
“हर असली चीज़ की लंबाई, चौड़ाई और ऊँचाई होती है,” उसने कहा। “लेकिन वह कुछ समय तक रहती भी है। वह कुछ देर के लिए वहाँ मौजूद होती है। इन चार चीज़ों में से हर एक एक आयाम है। एक आयाम वह दिशा है जिसे आप माप सकते हैं। इसलिए समय चौथा आयाम है। यह वास्तव में बाकी तीनों से अलग नहीं है। लेकिन हमारा मन इसके साथ आगे बढ़ता है, हमारे जन्म के दिन से लेकर हमारी मौत के दिन तक। इसीलिए हम सोचते हैं कि यह अलग है।”
“Every real thing has length, width and height,” he said. “But it also lasts. It is there for some time. Each of these four things is a dimension. A dimension is a direction you can measure. So time is the fourth dimension. It is not really different from the other three. But our mind moves along it, from the day we are born to the day we die. That is why we think it is different.”
