Wilk i żuraw

Pewien wilk ucztował zbyt chciwie i kość utkwiła mu w poprzek gardła. Nie mógł jej ani wypluć, ani przełknąć, i oczywiście nie mógł niczego zjeść. Naturalnie była to okropna sytuacja dla chciwego wilka.

A Wolf had been feasting too greedily, and a bone had stuck crosswise in his throat. He could get it neither up nor down, and of course he could not eat a thing. Naturally that was an awful state of affairs for a greedy Wolf.

Pospieszył więc do żurawia. Był pewien, że ona, dzięki swojej długiej szyi i dziobowi, z łatwością dosięgnie kości i ją wyciągnie.

So away he hurried to the Crane. He was sure that she, with her long neck and bill, would easily be able to reach the bone and pull it out.

„Wynagrodzę cię bardzo sowicie” – powiedział wilk – „jeśli wyciągniesz dla mnie tę kość”.

“I will reward you very handsomely,” said the Wolf, “if you pull that bone out for me.”

Żuraw, jak można sobie wyobrazić, bardzo obawiała się włożyć głowę do gardła wilka. Była jednak z natury chciwa, więc zrobiła to, o co prosił ją wilk.

The Crane, as you can imagine, was very uneasy about putting her head in a Wolf’s throat. But she was grasping in nature, so she did what the Wolf asked her to do.

Kiedy wilk poczuł, że kości już nie ma, zaczął odchodzić.

When the Wolf felt that the bone was gone, he started to walk away.

„Ale co z moją nagrodą?!” – zawołała niespokojnie żuraw.

“But what about my reward!” called the Crane anxiously.

„Co?!” – warknął wilk, obracając się gwałtownie. „Czyż jej nie dostałaś? Czy to nie dość, że pozwoliłem ci wyciągnąć głowę z mojej paszczy i ci jej nie odgryzłem?”

“What!” snarled the Wolf, whirling around. “Haven’t you got it? Isn’t it enough that I let you take your head out of my mouth without snapping it off?”

Nie oczekuj nagrody za służenie niegodziwcom.
