Trzej mężowie z Gotham

W Anglii jest miasteczko zwane Gotham i opowiada się wiele wesołych historii o dziwnych ludziach, którzy tam kiedyś mieszkali.

There is a town in England called Gotham, and many merry stories are told of the queer people who used to live there.

Pewnego dnia dwóch mężów z Gotham spotkało się na moście. Hodge wracał z targu, a Peter szedł na targ.

One day two men of Gotham met on a bridge. Hodge was coming from the market, and Peter was going to the market.

„Dokąd idziesz?” – zapytał Hodge.

“Where are you going?” said Hodge.

„Idę na targ kupić owce” – powiedział Peter.

“I am going to the market to buy sheep,” said Peter.

„Kupić owce?” – rzekł Hodge. „A którą drogą przyprowadzisz je do domu?”

“Buy sheep?” said Hodge. “And which way will you bring them home?”

„Przeprowadzę je przez ten most” – powiedział Peter.

“I shall bring them over this bridge,” said Peter.

„Nie, wcale tego nie zrobisz” – rzekł Hodge.

“No, you shall not,” said Hodge.

„Właśnie że zrobię” – powiedział Peter.

“Yes, but I will,” said Peter.

„Nie zrobisz” – rzekł Hodge.

“You shall not,” said Hodge.

„Zrobię” – powiedział Peter.

“I will,” said Peter.

Wtedy zaczęli uderzać kijami o ziemię, jakby między nimi było sto owiec.

Then they beat with their sticks on the ground as though there had been a hundred sheep between them.

„Uważaj!” – krzyknął Peter. „Pilnuj, żeby moje owce nie wskoczyły na most”.

“Take care!” cried Peter. “Look out that my sheep don’t jump on the bridge.”

„Nic mnie nie obchodzi, gdzie wskoczą” – powiedział Hodge. „Ale przez ten most nie przejdą”.

“I care not where they jump,” said Hodge; “but they shall not go over it.”

„Właśnie że przejdą” – powiedział Peter.

“But they shall,” said Peter.
