“Please help me. Tomorrow, on the twenty-sixth of September, at six in the evening, at the iron bridge. If nobody comes, I’m leaving. And then I’m never coming back.”
That was the first message I heard on my new old phone. And today is the twenty-fifth of September.
My name is Nele, I’m thirty-one and I repair bicycles in a small workshop in Leipzig. Last week my own phone fell into a bucket of oil. Because I don’t have much money, I went to the flea market by the canal on Thursday afternoon.
Between old lamps, records and coffee cups I found a table of electronics. Behind it sat an old man who spoke very slowly. He was wearing a grey coat, even though the sun was shining.
«Funziona. Apparteneva alla mia famiglia».
“Twenty euros,” he said, pointing at a silver phone. “It works. It belonged to my family.”
Nessuna password. Niente foto, niente contatti. Qualcuno ha cancellato quasi tutto. Quasi tutto.
I didn’t think about it for long. At home I plugged the phone into the charger, and after an hour the screen lit up. No password. No photos, no contacts. Someone had deleted almost everything. Almost everything.
There was still one single voice message in the mailbox. The voice belonged to a young woman. She spoke quietly, quickly, as if someone was nearby who mustn’t hear her. In the background I heard a train.
E in quel momento ho sentito freddo.
I listened to the message five times. Then I looked at the date it had been saved. And at that moment I went cold.
Esattamente oggi, solo undici anni prima.
The message wasn’t new. It had been recorded eleven years ago, on the twenty-fifth of September. Exactly today, only eleven years earlier.
Probabilmente tutto è andato a finire bene.
I told myself that it meant nothing. Back then the woman said “tomorrow”, and that tomorrow was long gone. Probably everything turned out fine. Probably she found someone who came.
Solo io.
But something bothered me. The message had never been opened. Next to it the little blue dot that means “new” was still glowing. Nobody had heard it. For eleven years, nobody. Only me.
I put the phone on the kitchen table and paced up and down the room. My flatmate Katrin came home and gave me a strange look.
“You look like you’ve seen a ghost,” she said.
