The Old Sailor at the Admiral Benbow
Squire Trelawney, the rich man who owned the land around our village, asked me to write this story. Dr Livesey asked me too. They want the whole story of Treasure Island, from the beginning to the end. I can tell everything but one thing: where the island is. Some of the gold is still there.
My name is Jim Hawkins. At the time of this story, my father kept the Admiral Benbow. It was an inn by the sea, near a small bay called Black Hill Cove. An inn is a small hotel with a bar, where travellers eat, drink and sleep.
I remember the day when the old sailor came. He walked slowly to the door, and a man with a small cart came behind him. On the cart was his sea chest. A sea chest is a big wooden box, and sailors keep all their things in it.
The sailor was tall, strong and heavy, with brown skin. His hair hung down his back in a long, dirty pigtail. He wore an old blue coat. Across one cheek he had an old cut from a sword, a long white line.
He looked round our little bay and began to sing an old sea song. Later he sang it very often:
“Fifteen men on the dead man’s chest - Yo-ho-ho, and a bottle of rum!”
Then he knocked on the door with his stick. My father came out, and the sailor asked roughly for a glass of rum. Rum is a strong drink, and sailors love it.
“This is a good bay,” he said at last, “and a nice place to drink. Do you get many people here, mate?”
“No,” my father answered. “Very few, I’m sorry to say.”
“Well, then, this is the place for me,” the sailor said. He turned to the man with the cart. “You there! Bring my chest up. I’m going to stay here for a while.”
Then he spoke to my father again. “I’m a simple man. I want rum, bacon and eggs, and that hill up there. From there I can watch the ships. And my name? You can call me captain.” He threw three or four gold coins on the step. “Tell me when that money is finished,” he said. He looked as hard as an officer on a warship.
His clothes were bad, but he was not like a simple sailor. He was more like a captain, a man who gave orders. The man with the cart told us more. The captain came to the Royal George inn the morning before. He wanted a quiet, lonely inn, so he chose ours. That was all we ever learned about him.
The captain did not talk much. All day he walked around the bay or on the cliffs with his telescope, a brass tube for seeing far away. All evening he sat in a corner by the fire and drank strong rum with water. When somebody spoke to him, he only looked up angrily and blew loudly through his nose.
